In our country the tourism sector has the largest direct employment
which has shown a growth rate of 6% in the past decade. The overall
value added employment in the tourism sector including hotels and
restaurants is estimated about Rs. 80,000 crores.

Young graduates who have flair for history and languages could work as
licensed guides. Tourist guides are in growing demand. Tourist guides
are paid satisfactorily and their work is interesting. They have to
meet new people. Proficiency in a foreign language is greatly helpful.
Indian Institute of Travel and Tourism Management (IITM) offers a
course after which the person can be empanelled as a guide. This is a
short duration course. Training in cultural tourism is more popular.
For tourist guide licence is issue both at state and central level by
tourism department. They hold examination depending on their needs and
advertise it in leading newspapers. The test consists heavily of

Now tremendous employment opportunities exist in this industry. Travel
services including tour operators, travel agents, hoteliers,
restaurateurs transport service providers, adventure and leisure
tourism providers, heritage sites and their conservation, manufacture
and sale of handicraft items, marketing of souvenirs- all of which need
professionalism. Besides the specialized services, there are the
support services: administration in the offices, secretarial and
clerical work.

Different levels and types of training are available for this industry:

Tourist Guide: The Govt of India Tourist Offices and the Indian
Institute of Tourism and Travel Management (IITTM) at New Delhi and
Gwalior, at the Kurukshetra University etc are some of the place for
Tourist Guide Training. These are short-term (3-4 months) for graduates
with a background in Art/Archeology/ History.

Tourism and Travel Administration/ Management is a comprehensive course
offered to graduated by several universities and institutes including,
DU, Delhi, Vikarm University, Utakl University, Sri Venkateswara
University, Kurukshetra University, Garhwal University, Annamalai
University, Jiwaji University, Lucknow University, AMU Punjabi
University, Goa University, SNDT Mumbai etc.
