The profession has people from various fields like journalism, law,
teaching, marketing, advertising, personnel administration, business
management, behavioral sciences and so on.
A degree in the liberal arts with a broad general understanding of the
social, cultural, economic and political affairs could be a good launch
pad. You should be a good communicator for both in the native language
and English.

Ability to communicate in Hindi is necessary for jobs in the central
government or public sector undertakings. You must also hold a degree
or diploma in PR, journalism or mass communication from a university or
institute of repute. MBA could also lead to PR jobs as management
courses tend to have in-built PR course components.

Formal training programmes are available as mass communication/public
relations degree/diploma programmes are conducted by various
universities. To be eligible one should have graduated in any subject.
There are one or two year's duration courses and selection is through
written test which is a test of communication skills. However even
short term courses of six months-nine months duration known as PG
diploma courses are conducted in various polytechnics or professional
training institutes.

Some consultancies and PR firms also provide on the job training for
new entrants (fresh graduates).

Then are several training institutions for career in Public Relations
including

(1) Indian Institute of Mass Communication, JNU New Delhi

(2) Mudra Institute of Communication, Ahmedabad

(3) Symbiosis Institute of Journalism and Communication, Pune,

(4) The Indian an Foundation for Public Relation Education and Research
(IFPR) New Delhi etc.

Basic eligibility criterion for admission to these courses is graduate
degree, entry is usually on the basis of entrance test.

Many universities run degree courses in Mass Communication and Public
Relation.
(1) South Gujarat University, Surat.

(2) University of Mumbai, Mumbai.

(3) Makhanlal Chaturvedi University, Bhopal.

After training you can get jobs in Corporate Organisations, Public
Sector Enterprises as well as Government Information Departments
(IIS-Indian Information Service).
