Hi everyone!
Happy New Year!
A quick reminder: we are meeting next Monday, January 7th from 12:00-2:00pm at ED 502 to go over final details before we take off.

Also, here is a short check list of what to pack:
  • passport and other ID (driver's license), plus at least one photocopy of your passport, ID, and visa (stamped inside your passport) and any bank info you might need should you lose your card
  • plane tickets or email confirmations
  • electrical transformer/ converter unit (if you are bringing electrical devices which need to be plugged in or charged)- Note: I have one which I am happy to share with others.
  • Money, cash or bank cards or credit cards.
  • a gift for the host family ($25 or under)...or something that you personally crafted for them as a thank you for inviting you to dinner at their house.  In general, things that are specifically American are cool.
  • wet wipes
  • hand sanitizer for those times when water is not readily available (a small trial size of 2 oz or less is probably more than enough) for those who are germ conscious
  • mosquito spray (Cutter Skintastic* brand is my favorite, but anything with DEET will keep them away)
  • sunblock (the sun is quite intense in Southern India)
  • toiletries
  • medications (if any)
  • Blister band-aids (to prevent blisters from walking), if needed
  • enough clothing for 2-3 days
  • basic Tamil vocab list
  • JOURNAL
  • comfy shoes or sandals
  • Women wear a scarf with tunic and pants.  So you could bring a scarf, if you want to.  I have lots to share.  Remember, low-cut t-shirts or blouses which reveal cleavage are not acceptable.
Remember,  liquids, gels, and sprays are forbidden to carry on to the plane (check your airline regulations, some allow products under 4 or 6 ounces).  You should plan to check one bag, unless you are going to buy all your toiletries in India.  Carry-on a back pack, purse, or satchel with all your ID, money, etc.  I usually carry a back pack with one change of shirt and underwear, plus small toiletries and makeup, plus money, ID, passport, copy of all travel papers, iPad, phone, etc.

To easily pass check points, all my stuff is in one-gallon ziplock bags.  All travel papers in one bag.  All makeup and toiletries in another bag.  Extra shirt and underwear in another bag. Plus I wear easy to slip on shoes and I carry a pair of socks for walking through airport security without shoes.

All electronics will have to be taken out of cases and scanned.

Feel free to add to this list as you think of other things to pack.  Or coordinate with someone else so you don't have to bring everything, perhaps you could share products with someone else, like electric converters, sun block or sun lotion, wet wipes or hand sanitizer, blister band-aids, etc.

See you soon!

My darling India group,

I've purchased my major tickets and have gone into total-excitement-can't-wait-to-get-going mode.  I hope you're all doing well.

Best,
Alaura
