Subject: Can obr endorse letter to UN women to intervene in the detention of 5 Chinese feminists
To: Kamla Bhasin <ka...@sangatsouthasia.org>, Abha Bhaiya <abhab...@gmail.com>Dear kamla and abha
I was wondering if you could share the letter on the obr india e group.so individuals can endorse. Also whether obr india as an identity can endorse.
Also whether you could consider petitioning un women as a global obr action point.if yes please feel free to make changes to the indian feminists letter.
I know that obr has already been active on this issue but I was wondering whether there could now be a focus on this one point agenda of unwomen which right now seems to be the only hope can be tried.
As you know there is very little time.they are very likely to be charged and imprisoned for five years by 6 th april.
Looking forward to how obr india and obr global can lend it's voice to the struggle.
In solidarity
Jaya

Dear Dr. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka,
We write to you as feminists from India who are deeply concerned about the five young Chinese activists who are in detention. As you are aware within 30 (or at most 37 days) since their detention on March 7th 2015, the Chinese authorities will need to make a decision about charging them. We therefore have till 6th April to act.
We believe that UN Women is co hosting the Global Summit to be held in September this year with the Chinese government. We would urge you to use this as a leverage with them to free the five feminists. The Chinese government should be made to see the contradiction between co-hosting a women's rights conference and detaining women's rights activists. Such events as you well know are ultimately the result of the work done by women's rights activists around the world and also seek to strengthen such work.
The choice of China as a partner for a Global Summit on women's rights would in our view be completely unacceptable and ethically inconsistent with the detention of the five Chinese feminists.
We feel that you are best placed to deploy the combination of persuasion and strategically low profile pressure on the Chinese government. This is one of the few hopes we have in a context in which the Chinese government is responding negatively to the open criticism it has received internationally so far.
As a UN body which seeks to represent the interests of women worldwide, and which has actively drawn upon women's rights activists from civil society as it advisers and partners, we sincerely hope that you will join us in this struggle to release the five young feminist activists.
We look forward to an early and urgent response from you.
