Does anyone whether it’s ok now to use periods, commas, and apostrophes in file and folder names? I’ve always avoided this to be safe because files go from Mac to PC to server and back. Is it ok now to use punctuation characters in file and folder names?

Thanks,
Rebecca

No. Not entirely safe, but usually OK. .
It is OK if you are Mac-only and do not use a file server.
But if you use a Windows server or a unix server, it would depend on the tools your IT dept. uses.

Usually it is OK, but if they use certain command-ine tools or apps to move data (say when migrating to a larger drive or new server), then some files with “bad” file names may get missed.
If restoring files from a backup, it also makes it difficult to locate files in many Windows and unix backup applications.

On our Windows server, I often use periods, underscores, and hyphens. Most other punctuation isn’t accepted.

Personally, I generally avoid spaces in my file and folder names. This is mostly an issue when a file is uploaded to a website. I find it a good habit to be in.
