How do you turn a plain text frame on a Master Page into a Master Text Frame? I'm sure there is a way to do it ...

thanks!
Pat

Are you in CC or CS6 or earlier?

Do you mean you want it to be a Primary text frame (frame on the master page that reflows as you add document pages and keeps the flow if you apply a different master)
In CC  and CS6 you just select the frame and then click the icon in upper left of frame to change it to “Primary” (has arrows)

For additional frames once you have a primary, you just link them to the primary by selecting the primary, clicking on the “out” port and linking that to the new frame.

Hi Bret,
Using CS5 in this instance. There is no option to make it the Primary text flow. Just an empty in port.

Oh CS5, sorry, as I recall, didn’t seem to be much point to master text frames before CS6.

Can you just draw a text frame or 3 on the master page, (link them to each other if there is more than one)
Then on doc page release (cmd-shift-click) the text frame from Master and flow text in on the document page (with shift or whatever the auto-flow key was for CS5)?

That works in CS6 but my memory fails for CS5.

CS5 Master Text frames don’t change when a new master is applied  (as one  might expect) , making them pointless to me.

And I think if you wanted to use the autoresizing/layout adjustment features, the frame had to touch all 4 margins.

Just draw frames on the MPs. They'll behave the way you want. I just tested it.

1. I use 2-page spreads for MPs for all pages.
2. Create text frames on both pages. Link them from left page to right (no need to link the last frame on right back to first frame on left).
3. Switch to the live page.
4. Hide guides. You'll see the outlines of the MP text frames in light blue lines.
5. Import a text file and click the loaded import cursor in the text frame. ID will flow the entire document into the frames and add as many pages as necessary.
