given that you've offered no context, i'd guess xml location paths

a single colon is evidently either a Cross-referenced paragraph or Bookmark or hyperlink destination marker (often a text anchor)
No double colons listed.

A single colon is an index entry marker. Two colons would be two index markers.

An index entry marker is a colon with a big circumflex-type thing
under it in layout view, and a colon followed by a rectangle with a similar form in story editor. A simple colon is a hyperlink destination marker in both views.

Ah, you're right, and I was staring right at it.

And it's more apparent for most things if you look at them in the story
editor . . .

I couldn't see a hyperlink destination marker in the story editor either,
and I couldn't figure out what it was, so I deleted it. Oops. Thank God
for preflight (that's one thing that's better than in CS4, isn't it?).
I relearned what at least should have been an old rule: "Never delete
anything just because you're not sure what it is."

Is there a way to remove these ?
I've got some text with a lot of them, but don't want to remove one by one.
Search/replace doesn't work on these or at least, when I paste the character in the search field.

These are from imported text.

I believe those are index markers (from memory, not checking). If the
book is going to be indexed, those might come in handy. However, if you
really want to remove them, you should be able to use Find/Replace.

Thanks Dick, but index markers have a circumflex on them.
And are not needed in this case.
These are cross references § marks, but there are plenty of them, even five or 6 next to one another.
I believe this happens when authors copy text from the web and grab some characters from there...
They are annoying to me, but don't affect the document.

I didn't manage to make the search replace work, they are pasted as "~I" but no instances are found.

Maybe delete them en masse from the cross-references panel?

Hi Michel,
did you try the search and replace from the story panel?

@Dick, I already looked, but there's nothing in there.

@Christophe, no, I'll try later, fortunately, it's only on a few pages of the document.
but I just had a quick look in the text editor, there are a lot of gremlins in this document.

Here's a sample of what it looks like

Copy text. Paste in Notepad. Copy text from Notepad. Paste back in InDesign.
Done.

Hello Oli,
Doing this changes my screen resolution... :-)
Anyway, I can copy the character in the search field, but it is not recognized as a special one there...

Yes, it doesn't work.
Anyway, there's something so strange with this part of the document, if you look at the excerpt I did put in the dropbox with the story editor...

I must still try Cris solution, although, I'm on the Mac and will try with another text editor than "Notepad", as it's a PC one ;-)

Yes, thanks, this works, although I did use Textedit as I'm on a Mac, but I lose all formating (bold, italic)

Regards,
Michel

Mmmmm…
I open your doc, export as « .idml » file and open it with BB Edit.
This is an extract of your text:

<Content>In het </Content><HyperlinkTextDestination Self="HyperlinkTextDestination/.98856" Name=".98856" Hidden="true" DestinationUniqueKey="223" /><Content>kader van een door haar georganiseerde openbare </Content>

So… these characters means « HyperlinkTextDestination ».

Oli.

I believe it's part of text generated from on DB on the Internet, and the author coped it from there, reason why I have all these gremlins. They are even inside some words ?!?
The bizarre thing is that I cannot zap them from inside InDesign, except one by one. I already removed some that way, but stopped, because a bit boring and useless.

As always, if you don't have any placed-in-text graphics, dump to Adobe Tagged Text and find-replace to fix such there, then re-import the text.

If you do have in-text graphics, use Em Software's Xtags instead.

FIXED! (at least the single colon invisible character)

If you, like me, don't need these hyperlinks – in my document, each paragraph begins with one of those, but we are doing a paperback print book – no need for hyperlinks ;-) – then there is an easy way to get rid of them if you need (but before you delete them make sure you will not need those links).

In order to delete all of them at once, go to Window > Types & Tables > Cross-References. In this new panel that will show up, there is a drop-down menu that appears when you click on the little black down-arrow on the top-right corner. On that menu, click on "Hyperlink Destination Options...". Selecting the "Type" as "Text Anchor", choose "Delete all". DONE. No more invisible colon characters.
