In the last few months I've been redesigning a black and white newsletter-for-print as a colour landscape version which I save to interactive PDF for the editor to send out. He, the editor, receives loads of kudos for the newsletter and I only get complaints! And it's all voluntary, free, gratis and for nothing.

It turns out that half a dozen or so of the members wish to print the colour-by-email version, but although their print dialogue box comes up and they hit OK, nothing happens. I can print it (not that I want to) and various other members can print it -- but the editor is one that can't. And it's no good telling them that hyperlinks/buttons and the like won't work on a printout, that it's been designed to be read on screen -- no, they want to print it.

So, is there some reason that interactive PDFs won't print on PCs? I say PCs because that's what these members are using and I have asked them to d/l the latest Reader. Is there something I don't know about in a PC's print dialogue box (yes, I'm on a Mac) that I could helpfully point out to these people?

This may not be the problem that you are having but often you can't print a pdf document from the windows print dialogue box, you only get a mostly blank page.
You need to print from  the invisible (until you mouse over it) tool bar to print the whole document.

I run into this a lot....and I am on a PC.

Acrobat remembers the last print setting and many folks have no idea how to change it. This is a particular problem if the last print setting included "reduce to fit" and the client can't understand why things are 4% smaller.

If you send me a copy of the PDF, I can see how it works here and let you know what settings to use.

Thanks Bob -- but what is the 'invisible tool bar' and where do I envisage Windows users seeing this?

Maybe it would work better if you included a ‘print’ button with a print action attached to it (as part of the pdf)?

I’ve made other interactive pdfs that are printed from PCs successfully, so it’s definitely something you can do.

Unfortunately for you, the same people who want to print it out and are having trouble printing it out, are also less likely to be able to troubleshoot WHY it’s not printing for them.

Thanks Heather. Didn't know you could do that but will research it. Am still wondering what Bob meant by the "invisible tool bar" ...
