Is it possible to attach aMac mini Apple M1 Chip with 8‑Core CPU and 8‑Core GPU
to my 2013 imac. I happy with my imac but have maxed out with mojave and intel chips.
I’d love to upgrade apps that require M1 chips, don’t want to lose my current apps.

Thanks Kathleen

What an interesting email. That’s exactly what I’ve been wondering for a few months now as I’m in the same sort of situation. Good luck and and I look forward to the outcome.

Me, too. I’d love to be able to have my M2 MacBook and my 2013 Mojave iMac communicate without having to transfer files using iCloud. Would love to use the iMac as an extension of the MacBook screen, too.

you can network them together over wifi, or through an ethernet hub if you use that. or you can connect via target disk mode, but that just is for file transfer (not access to launch apps). i don't think you can network two macs sharing screens and apps, unless you use a screen sharing app like Teamviewer.

see this link to use imac as an external monitor--but you can't view any files that way. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204592

i often use dropbox (free account is 2gb) to transfer files as well.

Target disk mode only works with two older Macs, sadly. I’ll look into Teamviewer, though.

Thanks!

I have not tried this myself, so grain of salt...

Google Remote Desktop might do what you want (and it is free)

remotedesktop.google.com

Let me know if you get this to work, Carl

Remote desktop isn’t really what I’m after, I just want to use the iMac as an external monitor.

Sidecar will let you use an iPad for this, and Universal Control will let you use one keyboard and mouse for both of them, but I need big screens to display documents. I typeset books so need to see both the InDesign document and a pdf of corrections. It’s easy to go back and forth between the two when they are the same size, but when the pdf is displayed smaller, it’s more difficult to track back and forth. The iMac’s screen would perfect because it is the same size/resolution as my current external monitor.

If I ever figure out how to use an old iMac as an external monitor, I’ll let the group know.

Kathleen (and  Rebecca and Ann),

My $.02 will not be what you want to hear but...
  • I don’t know what you all are using for your main monitors, but once I started working on a retina display laptop (some time ago now) I could not bear to use my 27” iMac to have a larger work area. It was far too blurry and less precise. I could see better on the laptop.
  • Rebecca’s question was about being able to see Acrobat comments and Indesign at the same time. Have you tried importing PDF Comments using the window of that name? It’s not perfect (Annotations, a paid plug-in from DTP Tools is better) but is way better than hunting around a pdf file. You have to train your editors/proofreaders, but it is all SO worth it. Here is the guide I created to train them: https://www.evernote.com/shard/s28/sh/1f748df9-0f38-436c-9b80-34733de162a3/e14a591b62baa7f16ad4c3397acb7072

Thanks, John. I wish I could import pdf edits. I’m just a freelancer, though. The editors I work with do a wonderful job marking up pdfs. Ultimately, it would be easier for them to do as your instructions show, adding only the changes to the pdf without also adding clarifying comments or drawing “break here” marks. I’ve forwarded info like yours to various managing editors but they have their own reasons why they mark up pdfs as they do. Perhaps because it makes it easier for them to verify the alterations, perhaps because not all their typesetters use InDesign. If I ruled the world . . . : )

For that, no, i don't think you can. your mini is 1 year too new.
maybe get a cheap monitor from craigslist or costco? there's many here in the sf bay area for under $100. or make friends with your local electronic recycler.

good luck!

Luna Display’s Mac-to-Mac Mode doesnt specifically say Mac mini + iMac below. You think that would work. And if so can you easily switch the iMac back to iMac only.

But yes, this is very interesting.
Kathleen

mac-to-mac mode

Extend your display to any Mac using Luna Display’s Mac-to-Mac Mode. Need a larger display option? Use any extra Mac computer as a second or extended display of your primary Mac computer. Dust off your old Macs and use them as an external monitor! Any combination of Mac models can be used for this Mode:

  • iMac + MacBook Pro
  • MacBook + MacBook
  • Mac mini + MacBook (MacBook as main display for Mac mini)

Mac-to-Mac Mode Features

  • Trackpad support for both computers
  • Keyboard support for both computers
  • Works with older Mac models (Secondary Mac)

Minimum Requirements

  • Primary Mac must be a 2011 model or later, and running macOS 10.11 (El Capitan) or later
  • Secondary Mac must be a Mac running macOS 10.11 (El Capitan) or later

Thanks for your interest in Luna Display!

Luna will allow you to use a late 2013 iMac running macOS Mojave as a secondary monitor for an M2 Mac mini.

You will need one USB-C Luna unit for this setup, it will work by plugging directly into the Mac mini.

If you want to use your iMac as the only monitor for your Mac mini, we would recommend taking a look at our headless mode guide here: Setting up Luna Display in Headless Mode.

Luna has a feature called Exclusive Fullscreen Mode, which you can disable if you need to switch between both systems. Disabling this feature will allow you to switch between using your secondary Mac as a display and accessing the files and programs that are on the Mac when using Luna.

You can read more about Exclusive Fullscreen Mode here:

My new MacBook does not have a USB-C port, it has three Thunderbolt-4 ports and an HDMI port. I have a small Thunderbolt dock with one USB-A port that I use for my printers and to charge the keyboard and mouse. Sadly, I managed to buy a monitor without USB passthrough/daisy-chain connection.

After looking at the cost of cables and adapters, it’s less expensive to buy a third monitor than connect my beloved 2013 iMac to the new MacBook. I can still display correction mark up pdfs on it because they are sent to me via email, which the iMac has.

I also have a 2005 21” Cinema Display that won’t connect to the new MacBook without paying for an adapter and a Thunderbolt cable.

At least I can say I got my money’s worth out of the iMac and Cinema Display!

Are you asking if you can use the iMac as a monitor for your Mac Mini? If so, no.

The Thunderbolt 4 is a combo port with USB-C--they use the same connector.

Yes, what David said.

USB-C is a connector type.
Various kinds of data standards can be handled over USB-C connector, including USB 3.2 and USB 4. Thunderbolt is compatible with all of the USB standards up to USB 4, as well as its own higher-speed and more versatile options.

Looks like I can get a mac mini M2 setup for $1309 from Amazon
Any thoughts on what else I’d need?
  1. As Judy said I can use dropbox (free account is 2gb) to transfer files from mini to imac.
  2. Dell, has a high res display $399
  3. Apple 2023 Mac Mini M2 Chip / 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD Storage - Z16K000R3 $799.94
  4. Docking station (info video below) on Amazon, $109

I use it as well for that purpose, and it works fine. For bigger files, an
USB key can be faster.

>2. Dell, has a high res display $399

For my Mini I bought an Asus display, 24² 1920 x 1200 pixel, ProArt series
with full sRGB color space, for about 250 euros: Asus PA248QV (there are
other sizes as well).

Are you sure 256 GB are enough for your storage needs?
Of course you can connect an external HD, but I think it pays off to think
in advance. For my Mini I chose a 512 GB SSD, so most of the time I don¹t
need an external storage device.

Valter

  1. If you subscribe to Microsoft Office, you also get 1 TB of OneDrive storage—all for $69 per year. (For $99, you can get 6 installs, each with 1 TB.)
  2. I have 2 Dell displays and 2 off brand—all 27 in 4Ks (in a 2x2 grid). The Spectre off brand was $200 on Amazon and is very good for the price.

David,
I have MS Word and Excel for Mac v16. I’m guessing that means I have MS Office, though when I search my imac I just see office 2011
We do have Dells for 2nd monitors -very happy with them. But I look the idea of a higher res for digital painting.

Valter, you’re right about storage. Apple has a $599 mini with 8GB which I can upgrade 24GB & + $400 and to a TG + $400.
I gather you can’t upgrade a mini later as parts are welded in.

I’ll probably go to my local computer store to have them transfer files though I do have a time machine with a TG external drive.
My imac has 1 TG of storage & 32 GBs of memory.
Do mac minis have a graphic card or is that no longer?
