I know the solution is “get with the program and subscribe to ID CC version but since ID 5 does everything I need (semi-retired)” is anyone having success running “5” on macOS High Sierra?

I’ve just gone through this in the past month.

I just got a brand new iMac for work and it came with High Sierra. I only want to use CS5 because I do not like being held hostage for monthly ransom from Adobe.

I have a new Mac Pro at home running Sierra, and not had any major issues with running CS5.

However, on the High Sierra machine for work, crashes are fairly common, even when I quit the program to shut down, it gives me a message like InDesign crashed unexpectedly.

I had even more problems with Illustrator, and yes, I know this is not an Illustrator list, but behavior of all the CS programs was not good. Illustrator would crash automatically if I tried to save my file to another directory. InDesign did on occasion, but Illustrator was every time.

I guess I’m having to break down and get the subscription. Siiigh…

My sense — unconfirmed, but based on things I've heard this and there —
is that the new file system that High Sierra imposes on SSDs may be a
major factor in incompatibility issues.

There is a way around it, undocumented by Apple, though I have not
upgraded, and am only basing my statements on hearsay:

Have you considered installing Sierra on that computer?

It sounds that you are caught between a rock and a hard place...

The new Macs are most likely using Apple's new OS file system. Technically, you should be able to reformat and install the older version. HOWEVER, before you do anything that drastic, I would install the older OS on an external drive and boot off of it to see if it even works. If it works without issue and the speed is OK, keep using the external drive. If it works but the speed is too slow, you can reformat the internal drive.

I'm having a problem with running heads from text variables when there are ellipses. It's a book of short stories, with the running head getting picked up from the story title. One story title has ellipses after the title words, one had them before and after. On the one that has them after, the title and the first dot shows up. In the one with them before and after, all that shows up is the first dot.

I suppose I could use the ellipsis character. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Robert
