After making the idml which I can't open. I cannot quit the .idd 5.5 file:

This message will close automatically when all the reuqired tasks have completed. You can click Cancel to return to InDesign. You can open the Background Tasks Panel to cancel the tasks manually (if the tasks support cancelation).

Help please.

first of all, it sounds like InDesign didn't properly finish the
process of creating the idml, which may be why you couldn't open it …

the error message you quote indicates how to cancel the background
task, did you try it?

if InDesign is truly hung, there is no special trick, you just have to
force quit it

I suspected ID cs5.5 of hanging at creating the IDML.

My current workaround is dragging un-dammaged idd out of Back-in-Time (Time Machine).

One possible cause(?):

I have dozens of links in this 40 pages files, but the # icons are set to six ais with imported artboards. And there are a lot of XML links that only exist in Structure which I can't get rid of. I though idml-ing would help.

I just remade my six ai links files as cs5.1, because they'd become cs6 ai. I'm using Soxy for version control for idd. ANd thought ai files opening in 6 and saving as legacy for cs5.1 would retain the ai cs5.1 file structure. Not so evidently

Where'd you find the script? I see that they say how to install but not where to download. I must've missed it.

Thanks, Bret,
I don't suppose I could change out all "pdf" instances to "idml" could I?

Assuming the text-file trick works, this is fantastic. Thanks! It says in the comments that two threads on the Adobe forum had 10,000 views between them, which shows that it has been a major annoyance indeed.

Downloaded but didn't install it, thanks. I'm happy to get rid of the background exporting for good. I've experienced inconvenient delays with PDF exporting all right - but only when the background exporting screwed up!

Will the script do Matthew's procedure (below)?

Yesterday, Adobe’s Matthew Laun posted a new, very simple workaround in the Adobe User to User forum. This procedure turns off all background exporting:

Mac OS:
1) Create an empty text file and save it with the name “DisableAsyncExports.txt”
2) Control+Click on the Adobe InDesign CS5.app file in your Applications folder and choose Show Package Contents
3) Move the text file from step 1 into Contents/MacOS/ so the full path to the file is now:
/Applications/Adobe InDesign CS5/Adobe InDesign CS5.app/Contents/MacOS/DisableAsyncExports.txt

The .txt solution works (cs55, macos10.7)

I tried the js-script (as start script) but got an error message.

Here is a new version (v. 1.1 - june 2011) of the script:

http://tomaxxi.com/download/controlBackgroundExport.zip

It works even if the .txt file got placed in the app. The .txt is default,
the script toggles on/off.

Will this work for cs5.5, full path below?
/Applications/Adobe InDesign CS5.5/Adobe InDesign CS5.5.app/Contents/MacOS/DisableAsyncExports.txt

May I turn my preflight back on?

Didn't work for me. Exact same thing happened.
Thomas send me an IDD & an IDML I couldn't open. I'm hoping the IDD was opened from the IDML.

I decided why not and gave the script a try, but it's not
working for me with 5.5 and Mac OS 10.6.3. I put it in the
Startup Scripts folder as instructed and launched ID, but
there was no new Disable Background Export menu item in
the File menu as shown on the InDesign Secrets page, nor
any other immediately apparently manner of toggling the
setting. No matter, as I doubted that I'd want to use it
anyway. What I would likely have done would have been to
enable background export in a certain situation, forget to
disable it afterwards, and then wind up again experiencing
the problem that the solution was supposed to have solved.

Thanks,

Roy

Thanks Thomas,

So you click the script for background-processing off, click script again forbackground-processing on?

Yes, it's the last menu line under 'file'. Here (german menu line) when it
mentions "activate" it IS activated, when it shows "deactivate" it IS
already DE-activated.

Your screenshot make me think you placed the script not into its folder.
Move the script file into the folder 'startup scripts'.
Close/open InDesign > Go to menu 'file' > At its popup end a new item
appears, mentioning 'active' etc. ...
