Need to know how join the documents to book and how to automate the numbers for chapter overview

Hi 

Need some experts help to find out is there a way to put automatic numbers for pictures and tables in a document and also need to know how to add 8 chapters which is done as a separate document and add it to a new book . while adding need to automate the numbers which is given for chapter overview in each chapter
