Data Modeler profile:
Profile narrative:
This position is responsible for producing and maintaining conceptual, logical and physical data models, and physical data architecture of data
warehouses, data marts, operational data stores and occasionally OLTP application databases. As a member of the Data Modeling and Architecture (DMA) team, the data modeler will serve as a reference and authority on the process of data modeling and ensure adherence of all data models and data architectures at WSIT to published standards and guidelines at WSIT and the WC enterprise. Data Modelers may also be assigned specific data repository domains that they will be responsible for becoming the subject matter expert on and the steward for the architecture and content. In their capacities as stewards and subject matter expert resources, they will be expected to stay current on all standards and guidelines (both corporate and WS), industry trends and best practices in data warehousing and data modeling, and the strategy, architecture and contents of the data repositories they are assigned to b stewards for.
Typical tasks and duties:
Analyze business requirements and translate into technical specifications and data rules.
Review documentation on data and profile sample data to confirm documentation or gain further insight for the purpose of producing a
relational or dimensional model of the data.
Develop data models for new repositories Enhance existing repositories Review and approve new data models or enhancements to existing ones
Serve as advisors and subject matter experts on project teams Assist WS Data Management in establishing strategies and new directions
Keep all documentation (business and technical metadata, data models, guidelines and standards, etc., processes) current
Required skills and experience:
Advanced knowledge and extensive experience in dimensional and relational data modeling
Very good data analysis skills, especially experience in modeling based on analysis of documentation and profiling of sample data.
Versed in Kimball and Inmon data warehousing philosophies.
Experience in successful implementation of a large data warehouse using Oracle on Sun Solaris or DB2 EEE on IBM AIX
Experience and demonstrated abilities in functioning in a cross-functional team and interacting with technical and non-technical peers and managers in a shared services organization
Advanced knowledge and hands-on production experience in multi-tiered data warehousing and operational data stores (5+ years)
Advanced knowledge and hands-on production experience in large operational data store (400G+) implementation in an Oracle database on a UNIX platform, and/or very large data warehouse implementation on IBM DB2 EEE (2+ terabytes) on IBM AIX
Strong understanding of data quality assurance processes and procedures Experience in writing test plans for testing correctness of ETL processes
and database contents General understanding of brokerage data and the securities industry Proven abilities to manage multiple priorities and assignments
Good communication and presentation skills
