Today students learned about English/Reading classroom expectations and
procedures and about their new teacher. They wrote a letter to Mr. Clymer
Kurtz, and studied the different types of internal and external conflict.

Incredibles Team Late Work Policy: You are encouraged to turn in EVERY
assignment on time. This helps you master the content you are learning and
allows your teachers time to check for understanding. Assignments turned
in one or two class periods late may receive only partial credit. Work
will not be accepted after it is two class periods late, and you will
receive no credit for the assignment. Illness and other extenuating
circumstances should be discussed in a timely manner with your teachers,
who may require a parent note.

and turned in handout), discussed author bias and purpose in a nonfiction

(handed in):

What is the author's purpose for including the following sentences (pages
19-21)?

"Junior, who said you could take over my garden? I should never've told
you I was planting peas today," I said.
Junior ... flapped an oily rag in my direction. "Oh, stop it, Ann Fay.
This is a man's job and you know it."
"And Daddy told me I'm the man of the house while he's gone."
...
But in our minds it wasn't a ditch anymore--it was a deep ravine with
serpents and giant spiders spilling over the top. And we didn't jump over
it--we closed our eyes, held hands, and flew over it.
...
Junior asked did I want to try running the tiller. "No," I said. "You
wanted to do it. Now do it."

Answer any three of the following questions about MLK's speech (viewable [

3. Quote from MLK's speech an example of figurative language. Also name
the type of figurative language it is, explain what it means, and tell why
it stands out to you.

4. If MLK were to give a speech to us today, what would he speak about?
Quote one of his metaphors or similes from the "I Have a Dream" speech
that he could still use, or change one of his metaphors or similes into
one so that it could apply to today's issues.

5. Who do you think MLK wanted to hear his speech (Who was his intended
audience)? What was his purpose for making this speech? Include quotes
from the speech to support your answer.
