Hi everyone,

I'm having a hard time figuring out which variables uniquely identify villages in 1999.  In 1982, it was set up similarly in Deck 1 with a state variable, district variable, and then the villages within each district (where district and village repeated 1 through N each time).  However, there's two different variables that could fill in for that village level variable when I look at the 1999 Deck 1.  There's q5, which is labeled "CD block" and q6 which has the label "tamuk/tehsil," both of which appear to repeat 1-N among districts, but they differ slightly.  If anyone has any insight I'd appreciate it.

Thanks!
Tyler

Though come to think of it for 1999 I think you might need the secure data even to get the anonymized village identifiers.  The IT person should be getting current students access as we speak (jury is still out on people who just graduated...)

Hi everybody,

My bad on the village identifier thing... There's actually a variable in Deck 1 of 1999 called vill_id, which I found a little bit ago.  It's not in the reds documentation, but it's at the very end of the deck, if anyone ever needs to use it.  Whoever put it there is my hero.

Cheers,
Tyler

Hmm, would you believe I never even noticed that in all my time using the data.  That works, and it will let you link the household survey to the village survey.
