Hi team,

Quite a good documents. Rose and Stella( all programme partners) you could share with our partners

Dear All

Greetings.  It's my pleasure to share with you all some very important and powerful documents that were used and shared by presenters from Vision of The Blind at our recent Exchange and Learning network meeting in Coast, which was on the theme of Disability.

It is my hope that they can challenge and inspire you in your efforts to support the rights of people with disabilities and mainstream disability issues throughout your work programmes and organisations.

For further info and even training opportunities, please feel free to contact Xavier Ouma or Hudson Karume, whose contact details are given at the end of the handouts

For those in the Coast region, please note that the next Exchange & Learning meeting will be hosted by SCOPE in Kilifi on May 15th on the theme of Gender-Based Violence & Sex Tourism

kind regards

Hi Rosa and All
Thank you so much for the document sent, it is a very good
document, however I have a concern which am also raising with the authors
of the document, the concern is on interacting with Persons with
Intellectual Disabilities whereby it is indicated that "PWIDS often
respond in inappropriate or unexpected ways"to us in KAIH this is
demeaning and it portrays an image or perception that they are hostile
which is the same information that most people have and therefore PWIDs
are more than often excluded socially, politically and economically. We do
acknowledge that PWIDs have difficulty in communication and therefore
people should be made to understand how to communicate effectively to them
e.g. breaking down information in a simplified way, taking caution not to
perceive adults with intellectual disabilities as eternal kids,
dependent people, irresponsible, immature. And finally use of alternative
communication and support persons who will support them to understand
information which is being passed to them.
Once again thank you very much for the document

Regards

Hi Fatma

Thanks you for this critical observation and information. I agree there is quite a lot of misconception regarding PWIDS, there is need to be sensitive with the terminologies we use when referring to PWDS. Please do share this issue with the author of the document. I am glad that you are part of this discussion.
