To our partners in the SCPGE project of VSO,
Here's a note I originally sent to the KAPACIDA group in Kirinyaga. Thought it might be useful to you as well as you plan for the Day of African Child celebration on June 16.
Please feel free to email us VSO volunteers (including Mila and Saraha) if you need help.
Thanks for your email. This year's theme for DAC is: "Eliminating Harmful Social and Cultural Practices Affecting Children: Our Collective Responsibility."
Please plan your activities and program around this theme, and reflect it in your proposal.
For instance, you may want to tap some children with disabilities to make a presentation (song and dance, skits, for example) during the program and others (i.e., those who are in school) to share what going to school and being able to interact with able-bodied students in the same environment means to them.
Special unit and/or special special school teachers may also be asked to share about their experiences teaching these children, including positive stories highlighting the beneficial impacts of opening the doors of primary schools to these children in keeping with the aims of inclusive education.
One of two parents of special needs children may be asked to speak as well about has changed in their children after they were given the opportunity to go to school and learn with other children.
Then your group can prepare a pledge of support (one-page printouts can be distributed during the event), for key stakeholders to sign and submit to you. This is a good starting point for further engagement. I've attached a sample pledge, though not about disability but health. You can adapt this and draft your own, and I can edit it. This signing of a pledge of support can cap the day's event.
Hope this helps. Please feel free to email me again for further assistance or any clarification.
