Dear All,

Yet another interesting read, one that should give us pause on a potential policy direction for the disability cause in Kenya.

This story is about a newly launched disability insurance scheme in Australia , dubbed Disability Care. The novel idea behind this scheme posits that disability is not a welfare issue but one of insurance, akin to saying people with disabilities do not need to be treated as charity but as consumers, entitled to the same rights and essential services (from government no less) as other sectors of society.

Accorded the right and appropriate support, PWDs are not "burdens" to society.
The seeds for this landmark insurance program were planted when a mother demanded to know from a top official of an NGO working with PWDs "why she couldn't get the support she needed for her disabled son."

The newly minted insurance scheme has been a long time coming, but well worth the wait, if one may say so.

Regards,
Tess
