Dear Partners,

The Global Action Week (GAW) is a worldwide campaign organized annually by to raise awareness on the importance of Education for All.  Globally, this year’s event is scheduled for 22nd- 26th April 2013 under the theme 'Every Child needs a teacher'

In Kenya Elimu Yetu Coalition (EYC) and her member organizations are commemorating this event through a campaign to be held on 25th April 2013, at Daniel Comboni Primary School, Nairobi.

The campaign dubbed ‘Every child needs a teacher’ seeks  To lobby the relevant stakeholders to address issues of teacher recruitment, proper teacher remuneration, training of teachers so as to increase access to education for all and improve quality of education by 2015. The campaign acknowledges that Kenya has made tremendous steps towards achieving free primary education. However, with the various gains made and the high enrolment rates witnessed in Kenyan Public Primary schools, there exists a gap with regards to the number of professional, well trained and well supported teachers who are to deliver education services to the increased number of learners in learning institutions. Notably, there is also insufficient number of experts on specialist educational areas like Early Childhood Education (ECE), Special Needs Education (SNE) and Inclusive Education (IE). This has consequently had an effect to the quality of education being offered in the Public Primary schools and bridging it is very essential in the attainment of the Millennium Development Goal 2 on Universal primary education. The campaign targets the Ministry of Education, Teachers Service Commission (TSC), Donor representatives, Teacher Unions (KNUT; KUPPET), Parent Associations, CSOs, DPOs, KISE, Special learning institutions and parliamentarians.

VSO Jitolee, and the national DPOs – KAIH and UDPK constituted the EYC planning committee.  We wish to invite the project partners in Nairobi to participate in this event. For the purpose of shared learning, the SCPGE project is supporting the video documentation of this campaign and we do hope to share the video clips among all the project partners. Those participating in the campaign will also be expected to share their key learning and experiences during the planning workshop scheduled for 2nd-3rd May.

Special appreciation to Charles Mutua - the national volunteer at Heshima CBR group, for ensuring that we secure the venue at Daniel Comboni School, which is one of the schools that the CBR group is engaging, and to Tess and Saraha, for representing KAIH and UDPK respectively in the EYC planning committee.

Regards,

Rosa
