Screencastify is a Google Chrome extension. If LockDown Browser is detecting that Screencastify is running, the LockDown Browser session will not be permitted to open until you disable or uninstall it.

Are you looking for an affordable tool to make employee training videos and other screen recordings? Discover how you can start exploiting this user-friendly extension on your Chrome browser to make screen recordings for absolutely free.

The first step is installing the Record extension from the Chrome Web Store, your Screencastify Dashboard, or the Screencastify website. Remember that to install and use Screencastify; you have to be using the Google Chrome browser.

I use Screencastify in so many ways in my classroom. What I really love about Screencastify is how easy it is to get started and use it. I just quickly open up a new tab, click on the extension, and away I go!

Screencastify includes all these wonderful keyboard shortcuts (and I love keyboard shortcuts!) that can help you save valuable hours of your precious time. You can take it a step further by customizing your keyboard shortcuts using the options menu in Screencastify to really maximize your productivity! What is Screencastify? So you first might be asking, what is Screencastify anyway? In a nutshell, it is a free Google Chrome extension that allows you to record your screen.

This opens up the customizer for all of your Chrome extensions. Here, you can not only change the keyboard shortcuts for Screencastify, but you can also change them for any other extension that you have installed!

Tab Resize: Suppose while teaching a virtual class, the teacher has to toggle from one browser tab to another, or show a comparison between data on two different tabs, Tab Resize is a good chrome extension to facilitate screen split views in Screencastify videos. Access it by clicking the link

Editor for Docs, Sheets and Slides: You have seen how annotation works in a Screencastify video. While the tools come in handy to highlight content on a website/ image/ prefilled text document, this extension can help create instant Docs or Sheets for the teacher to solve a Maths problem for example. Almost like a Whiteboard then. Access it by clicking the link

@Stef_retired , I have embedded the screencastify videos into my modules, and when I look at them, they work. They work in Student View, they work for my fellow teachers who are listed as Observers for my course, but when my actual students log in, instead of being able to click on a link, or watch the embedded video, it just "reset". Any idea what is going on here? Please help.

I suspect that if you are worried about this one, then you probably want to ban *all* extensions. Just blocking this one, which at least appears to be provided by a team that is responsive to cybersecurity changes (notice the quick fix to the XSS bug and the longer-term tightening of the externally_connectable setting), would not do much. IMO, it would probably cause users who were determined to share their screens, even when asked not to do so, to seek out less well-known screen sharing extensions.

Step 9: To stop recording, hover your cursor on the bottom of your screen to pause or stop (pausing will allow you to continue, stop ends the recording) OR click the screencastify icon on the top of your browser to pause/stop recording.

I have documented how I use SnagIt to make recaps on my Chromebook. SnagIt met my needs until it had a problem with static in March 2015. I researched and found that Screencastify does essentially the same thing. Screencastify is an extension for the Google Chrome browser so it works an any computer with the browser.

Screencastify, a free screen recorder for Chrome which was initially created for use outside of education, now reports that 70% of its users are teachers. The idea for Screencastify came when Manuel Braun, Founder, and current Chief Technology Officer, recognized that the options available for creating a screen recording were either expensive, involved a difficult or time-consuming process, or required the download of the software. According to James Francis, CEO of Screencastify, people who wanted to create a screencast almost had to be a professional. It was an opportunity to take something that had been a complicated experience and make it simple. In 2016, Screencastify became the first Chrome extension that could access video and record the screen.

This is most likely going to be used more by teachers as a way to record what is happening on screen, perhaps while adding a voiceover to guide students. As this is a simple extension it is very easy to install and use on multiple devices.

We have already answered what Screencastify is on a basic level. However, to provide more clarity, it is an extension that works using Google and, specifically, Chrome. That means it can, technically, record a video of anything going on within a Chrome browser window.

The final step in using Screencastify is to share your video with your audience. You can share your video directly from the Screencastify extension by clicking on the "Share" button and selecting your preferred sharing method. You can share your video on YouTube, Google Drive, or even download it to your computer.

The popular Screencastify Chrome extension has fixed a vulnerability that allowed malicious sites to hijack users' webcams and steal recorded videos. However, security flaws still exist that could be exploited by unscrupulous insiders.

The extension is integrated with the vendor's website, which is necessary for offering video editing functionality. Unfortunately, while this is convenient and straightforward, it is also a source of risks.

Even if XSS flaws were to be addressed by all of the companies that use Screencastify, the question of trust towards these entities remains, as choosing to use the extension is entrusting third parties with full access to your Google Drive contents.

The extension functionality that the exploit POC used to retrieve the Google token has been entirely removed from the code. This makes the entire scenario as described impossible whether a new vulnerability was discovered or not.

When I attended an EL conference in 2017, one participant shared that he used Screencastify as a tool to allow him to virtually sit beside each student as he gave feedback. Screencastify is a cloud-based screen recording program. You simply add it as an extension to your Chrome browser.

Updated Screencastify, a popular Chrome extension for capturing and sharing videos from websites, was recently found to be vulnerable to a cross-site scripting (XSS) flaw that allowed arbitrary websites to dupe people into unknowingly activating their webcams.

But Palant contends the browser extension continues to pose a risk because the code trusts multiple partner subdomains, and an XSS flaw on any one of those sites could potentially be misused to attack Screencastify users.

The Screencastify page on the Chrome Web Store says that the browser extension has more than 10 million users, which is the maximum value listed by store metrics. As Palant points out, the extension is aimed at the education market, raising some unpleasant possibilities.

What's concerning about this is that the extension code gives several other domains these same privileges: not just Screencastify, via the app.screencastify.com domain, but also Webflow, Teachable, Atlassian, Netlify, Marketo, ZenDesk, and Pendo, each via Screencastify subdomains.

Palant said he reported the issue on February 14, 2022, and his message was acknowledged the same day. A day later, the XSS on the error page was fixed. The message he received also mentioned a long-term plan to implement Content Security Policy protection, but as of May 23, according to Palant, that hasn't happened on app.screencastify.com nor www.screencastify.com, apart from the addition of framing protection.

Palant in response told The Register on May 25th, "In their blog post they claim: 'No subdomains controlled by our partner services have direct messaging access to the latest release of the Chrome extension.'

"To clarify, there is no flaw that has been discovered or proven that would allow for the 'No user interaction' scenario," said Black. "Additionally, even if there were a known exploit that would allow an attacker to take advantage of the functionality mentioned in the report, the function that could have allowed an attacker to steal a google token and compromise a user's account has been removed from the extension entirely."

This seems like a great tool for secondary level students to utilize. I've been looking for a tool that doesn't require any programs to download. Is it easy to install extensions? I also really like that the free version seems like it would be plenty for my students.

Hi Jess,

In general, it's very easy to install extensions. That being said, it depends on what your school allows for student computers - in same cases, the ability to install extensions might not be enabled. So I'd recommend testing with a student login/computer before having all your students install it, just to make sure it works all right with your school settings!

Students using Chromebooks cannot install Kaltura Capture on their machines to submit videos for assignments. They can, however, use the Chrome extension Screencastify to capture their video and then upload that video.

Using Google Slides with animated text boxes, I recorded a read-long of the Hail Mary prayer in French for my students for Catholic Education Week. I have also created one for the new version of Notre Père. The screencast was recorded using the Screencastify Chrome extension. It's pretty easy to use once you have added the extension (which only works on a computer and not mobile devices) and have enabled your video camera and audio input.

Useful Tips for Creating Video with Screencastify

If you want to create a screencast of a Google Slides presentation in presentation mode, which is useful if you want to take advantage of animation or slide transitions, change the part of the URL that says "edit" to "present". It will open in presentation mode within your browser tab so that you can access the Screencastify extension and begin, pause or stop the recording. Use a headset or earphones with a built-in microphone. I use my old Beats Solo headphones (which I got for free one year during a back-to-school promotion when I purchased a new MacBook Air at my local Apple Store!). I find the sound quality is better than the built-in mic on my computer, especially because it doesn't pick up much background noise or the annoying clicking sound each time I press a key to advance through the slides.Wait a few seconds after the recording begins before talking so you can close the toolbar that pops up at the bottom left. Then you can you trim the video once it loads in a new Screencastify tab by adjusting the scissors. You can also crop the video, too, if you open the file in the Screencastify Editor.
