Iemailed support@xamarin, and mentally blamed Google Chrome as it's well know they've been having trouble with their Web Font rendering of late. In fact, Jin Yang (@jzy) had to abandon Montserrat, our Web Font of choice, for a more conservative one whilst doing the Hanselman.com redesign due to Google Chrome's poor font rendering on Windows. (It's lovely on Mac.)

Well, what's changed is that I gave a talk at Xamarin Evolve this week, and in preparation, installed Helvetica Neue. It's a lovely font and I think it worked nicely for my talk and looked great in PowerPoint.

The Helvetica Neue font that I installed for my presentation is very poorly hinted (if at all) at small sizes like the one's being used. It's just not a Web Font, and while it's great for the giant sizes I needed for my talk, it's lousy for the web.

While it's obvious it would have major effects in retrospect, I had never realized that a machine-wide "common" font installation like this could mess up font rendering in my browser. I think the best solution (even though I'm deleting Helvetica Neue) would be to use an explicit Web Font in your stylesheets when possible rather than relying on a system font like Helvetica, even though they are the ultimate fallback. Any designers want to weigh-in the comments?

I have purchased a PC standalone version Acrobat Pro DC for

my windows computer. I cannot get tech support for this version any longer

because it is over 12 months. Here is my issue. I need to install the Helvetica

font to my Acrobat Pro DC program and cannot find how to this.

I deal with a lot of

PDF's. The files are emailed. I put the pdf's on my computer to be edited. Text

is the only thing that is edited, not the pictures. With the original emailed

pdf I cannot edit the file. I have to print the pdf to Adobe before I can make any edits. This is

done by choosing Print, then choosing Adobe, then give it a file name and Save.

This creates a new file that can be edited. All the original material it there.

The original pdf's are in the Ariel font. When the pdf is saved using the print

to Adobe, it USE TO SAVE ALL FONTS TO THE ARIEL FONT. Now the issue is this:

When print to Adobe it converts the entire pdf font to Helvetica, not Ariel any

longer. When I open the editable pdf all the fonts are Helvetica. So, to say I

have a 50 pages to each report in the Helvetica font. Acrobat Pro DC does

not come with the Helvetica font. I cannot find how to install the Helvetica

font to Acrobat Pro DC. Can anyone help. Thank you.

Thank you so much for your response. That explains why I could not get the font to work. You made mention of "tables to equate Arial with Helvetica if no Helvetica is installed." How does a person access these tables and is there any way to make a pointer for incoming Helvetica font to convert to Ariel? Maybe make all incoming pdf's convert to the Ariel font. Is this possible?

If in fact you have a PDF file that calls for display of text using Helvetica, but Helvetica is neither embedded in the PDF file nor installed on your computer, Adobe Reader / Acrobat will substitute Arial for display and print. The same is true for Times and Times New Roman as well as Courier and Courier New.

Perhaps you can post a sample of a PDF file for which you need to do something in order to edit it? That way we can address the heart of your issue. (Contact me via private message on the forums if you need to provide me a pointer to a file location).

With regards to the font equivalence tables, Reader / Acrobat has some simple equivalences built in per above. A much more complex and complete table for substitutions appears in the Windows registry which generally I would not recommend messing around with (you can really muck up Windows' font and text handling if you edit that registry table improperly). Microsoft Office does use that table and if, for example, you were given a Word, Excel, or PowerPoint document from a Mac that references Helvetica, Office does substitute Arial for display, print, and PDF creation.

Finally, one of the problems with using the original Type 1 format version of Helvetica (or Times or Courier, etc.) under Windows (as opposed to an OpenType CFF or TrueType font with the exact same name) is that although Windows and Adobe applications still support Type 1 fonts, Microsoft Office 2013 and 2016 as well as some other applications have totally dropped support for these legacy Type 1 fonts even if said fonts are installed.

Font Book automatically checks for duplicates when you install a font, and shows a message if the font is already installed. You can choose whether to keep both versions, skip font installation, or replace the existing font with the new font.

I had the exact same issue. I tried ALL the suggested fixes, like the windows update security issue and all these very technical methods. I tried re-installing fonts and at one point I even laid hands on my PC and prayed for it to repel the font demon that was cursing my computer!

MY FIX: Go to your font directory and delete all the HELVETICA fonts, especially the "Helvetica Neue Thin" font. I had to use SHIFT+DELETE to make sure it was gone for good, and I also had to close and reopen the font folder a couple times. Once they were gone...BAM! No more font issues on the pages that were driving me crazy!! Good Luck!

While you are still looking at a website in your browser, use the key combination Ctrl + 0 (that's the number zero). This restores the zoom level if you have accidentally changed it (which may cause the symptoms you have described).

If you right-click the problem text and choose Inspect Element (Q), Firefox should open the Inspector tool in the lower part of the tab. On the right side across from the HTML source code is a box that can usually shows style Rules. Click the little Fonts heading to show the font being used for the problem text.

And if none of these recommendations work, also try getting the latest display drivers for your hardware. If you do not know how to do that, please provide information about your display hardware which can be obtained as explained here: -gb/windows/what-is-system-information#1TC=windows-7

I was having a font issue in chrome. The body font would always render in a kind of skinny font that was poorly defined. I tried all the suggested fixes for windows clear type, changing the fonts in chrome, clearing cache, turning off hardware acceleration etc.

The problem didn't affect MS Edge. I updated Edge to Edge Chromium, to see what would happen and to see if I could glean some answers by playing with settings in the new version of edge. Bam! as soon as I finished upgrading, Edge had the same problem. Adjusting Appearances/Fonts in Edge also got no results.

I checked the registry and found that the default font entry was blank. I don't have any idea if this is normal or not. I changed it to read "arial.ttf". I basically copied the Arial (TrueType) registry entry. I then rebooted my computer. Boom! it fixed the problem with both browsers. I haven't noticed it having a poor effect on anything else either. (At least not yet.)

If you want to increase readability of fonts on all the websites you visit with Chrome, you can use this free extension: Chrome Font Super Enhancer. It applies the same CSS fix automatically to all pages.

I don't have these weights of the fonts already so there shouldn't be a conflict. I do think I was able to add the Bold Condensed and Condensed Oblique weights the other day so I don't know why those worked and these ones won't.

Thank you for reaching out to Apple Support Communities, and we'll be happy to help in any way we can. To start, check out the steps listed here to install and validate fonts in Font Book on Mac: Install and validate fonts in Font Book on Mac

Next, what we would recommend, is testing this issue in another user account. What we need to do, is log out of your current user. Log back in under another Standard or Administrator account and see if the same issue occurs there. This article goes over user accounts in more detail: Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac

I've tried adding the fonts from both my user accounts and the problem is still there. Both my accounts are admin accounts. I've also tried ensuing the other account is logged out and it doesn't help.

From the names you list, these are ancient Type 1 PostScript fonts. Most, if not all of these will conflict with the Helvetica fonts included with the OS. Since you cannot disable the OS installed fonts, you will not be able to use these old fonts in Catalina or Big Sur.

If you require the use of PostScript fonts, then it's time to get modern OpenType versions from Adobe. They don't conflict with the OS supplied versions. Otherwise, you can use the TrueType versions included with the OS.

To install a custom font on Android, obtain the TTF file of the font you wish to use and also download the zFont 3 app. Use the zFont app to install the TTF. It may require some prerequisites and the app will help you do it. Additionally, some manufacturers allow you to change the font from the settings, and you might also want to try a launcher.

Before getting started, check and see if your phone has a native method to do this. Samsung phones, for example, let you change fonts from the settings. You can also download and install fonts from the Samsung Theme Store. Other manufacturers that make changing fonts easy include OnePlus, Xiaomi, and OPPO.

This is important, as zFont requires that your phone can actually change the font to work. Not to mention, it might be easier than the method we use in this tutorial. We show you how to change Samsung fonts in this guide. With other manufacturers, this option is usually in the themes app.
