I recently learned that Projects and Places made in th eGlobal portal cannot (or cannot always, in all windows?) be found in Searching the NZ Portal
This explains why often when I try to edit a Project by changing the Place, or try to edit a Place, I have not been able to do so.
Also, I would sometimes see Place suggestions in Edit Project, for Places I had decided to delete some time ago but not been able to delete as I couldnot find them in Find a Place.
So I went into the Global portal, searched for Places using name roots I use a lot, and indeed found several I was able to delete.
In some cases though, I cannot tell whether a Place is made in Global or NZ, as I sometimes added ", NZ" to places, because I had seen that ending so I thought it was what I should do.
So some of my "NZ made" Places have had the ",NZ" suffix and look the same as if they were Global-made.
So, on Wednesday Dec 19 I deleted a numbe of my Places, going through my Projects one by one to check they were not using that Place, and if they were, making a substiture place.
For some time I had, in some windows, eg Filters, been unable to find "Kaipatiki Creek Restoration (I forgot exactly what followed), Auckland, NZ"
So on Wednesday I assumed that was a Global one, and, after creating a new one in NZ portal and replacing the old one in all the Projects using it, I deleted the Global Place.
The next thing I noticed was that all, or at least all I checked, of my "Kaipatiki Creek Zone" Collection Projects under the Umbrella Project
https://inaturalist.nz/projects/kaipatiki-creek-zone-collection-projects, had no Place ilinked to them in the "Edit Project window) had over 15 million obbservations. Assuming this could be problematic for users or servers, I hastily searched in "Find a Place" for Places named "Kaipatiki Creek Zone (Aa, Ab, etc to Zd) and found only 3. No matter how I searched - partial, full name, etc.
So to stop the millions of Obs appearing in each of several dozen Projects I added one of these three remaining Places to each of the Zone Projects, which stopped the millions of obs.
I have asked for help in the iNaturalist forum, and Tony Iwane has asked me to explain what the problem is, which i have done.
In the meantime, I started making new places for the Zone Projects, and the first 7 or 8 went well but then ...well its too hard to remember all the things that occurred, but basically I couldn't find Projects or Places I have made.
There are some things NZ members might be able to help me with:
Is there a way to know if the Project or Place whose name one is looking at is made in the NZ Portal?
If a Project is made in NZ does it need to have NZ made Place? And a Global Place for a Global Project?
Is it normal for Place edits not to be reflected in their maps in an Umbrella Project, and Observations not to be updated to match, for 8-24 hours, sometimes never?
If this is normal, is there any way to see a Place's Satellite view, and the Satellite view in "Edit a Place" or "Make a New Place", with the same view (ie same year of Googleearth) and/or at the same scale, while making a new Place so the edges match up? ('ve been doing this using two browser tabs, one for the Umbrella showing the map, but often the two views are very different. Eg one has house numbers etc, the other doesn't)
Thanks for any advice.
