Extracting location info from photos

Why is it impossible to extract location information from photos which
are already geocoded? As far as I can tell, the only way to do this
currently is to use Flickr as an intermediary (and I don't want to use
Flickr). I use a process to automatically (more or less) geocode many
of my photos, but it's rather tedious to upload them to iNat then have
to manually enter the location. Given that more and more photos are
geocoded naturally, shouldn't reading the location out of the metadata
(assuming it exists) be a basic function?

Well, I figured out how to get it to work through Picasa. The problem I was having was the Picasa wasn't recognizing the geocoded information (it only does this if you change a setting). I'd still like to see iNat do it on it's own, though.

I think being able to obtain locations from geotags is a good idea and
I think it's something that has been mentioned as a possible addition
to the site in the future. I'm all for it!

Sorry for the late reply, guys. Extracting coordinates from EXIF tags
is on the TODO list, just not there yet. For those using Picasa, make
sure you upload pics to Picasa that include the original EXIF tags.
iPhoto may strip them out, I'm not sure. When I use Picasa I just
upload directly through the website, though I imagine their desktop
client extracts coordinates correctly too. Once you have them in
Picasa you should see a little map under the photo details. Then when
you import into iNat the coordinates should be preserved.

Kristina, since it sounds like you're using a Mac, you can check if
your camera is adding the geotags by opening a photo in Preview,
selecting Tools / Show Inspector, and clicking the little circle with
the "i". That should show you your EXIF info. For me there's a GPS tab
for photos with GPS info.

I'm not in front of a desktop but there's an additional complication. You have to change a setting in Picasa online (website) which tells it to use embedded location data. I can try to find out what it was called tonight.

Thanks Ken-ichi. You were right, the EXIF and GPS data are attached, but iPhoto ignores it. The preview trick confirmed it. Thanks!

Hi,

I know this is an old thread, but I was also looking for a way to have iNaturalist directly read coordinates from EXIF data. I now realize that I could use Picasa, though prefer not to use Picasa. Thus, I just wanted to write and say there is continued desire for iNaturalist to automatically pick up the Geotags from photos, and it would be more conducive to adding more observations, particularly given how many cameras automatically geotag photos now, and how easy it is to post-process to geotag them.

Thank you for your work on iNaturalist - it is a great resource!
Cheers,
Mike

Hi Michael,

When you're adding observations at
http://www.inaturalist.org/observations/new, click "From photos" in
the upper right. That will take you to
http://www.inaturalist.org/observations/upload, where you can
drag-and-drop or choose photos and iNat will read location and date
info from your EXIF tags.

If you read the geotag, date info, and an EOL style taxonomy:binomial tag, you've got a basic observation just from the photo. Are am I missing something?
