Hi,

I am having two problems with the iNat app on my new iPad.

1.  The photos taken in iNaturalist do not appear in my photo file on the iPad.  They did from my old iPad (2) but not with the 4.  Is anyone aware of a setting that allows this to happen.

2.  iNaturalist crashes when I attempt to upload photos.  It is syncing my observations, but when it gets to the photos it shuts down.  I thought about trying to delete the app and reinstall, but then I would lose all the photos, because of problem 1!

Thanks for all suggestions.

Valerie

Hey Valerie,

The apps don't download pre-existing data from the website (yet).
They're really just tools for recording, though this is something we'd
like to change. Regarding the crash, this is a known bug that I can't
seem to figure out. The only recommendation I can make is to delete
some of your unsynced photos and try again, preferably over WiFi.

If anyone from the SF Bay Area is experiencing this bug, I'd love meet
up with you to see it happening. I can't seem to replicate it, but
numerous people have reported it. Kinda driving me nuts.

Hi Ken,

I was successful in over-riding the crash by deleting the observations on the iPad I made before it started happening.  I should probably have tried just deleting the last successfully uploaded one, but because I had recently started with a new iPad, I just deleted them all.  So you can perhaps give that as advice.

I tried first just to delete the photos that happened around the time of the crash, as you suggested, but that didn't change anything.

I may have triggered the crash by making changes to a photo or an observation on the iPad that had already uploaded.  Maybe I'll try to see if I can deliberately trigger the problem.  I'll let you know how 'successful' I am.

On the first part of my original question, I think you misunderstood my problem.  I am not trying to download pre-existing data from the website - although that would be pretty cool.  Rather, it's a difference with how the photos are handled on the iPad itself.  On the iPad 2 I was using, the photos were automatically included on the camera roll outside the iNat app.  On my iPad 4, they are no longer there, and the only way I can access the photos is through the app.  I just tried the iPad 2 again, and it still does this.  Is there a setting somewhere that allows for the sharing?

Hey Valerie,

Sorry for the late reply. I'll look into it. I don't *think* Apple
changed the way apps write photos to the Camera Roll between iPad
versions, but maybe. I'm not aware of a setting that controls this.

I am having an issue with uploading photos on my PC. I'm running Windows 7 in 64-bit mode, using Firefox.  When I go to the Observaions page, select "from photos", then drag and drop photos from Microsoft Photo Gallery, I get an error message for every photo that I attempt to upload: "Internal Server Error." the images appear with all the necessary fields which i can edit (although it doesn't import date or location info even though i have the GPS function turned on on my camera).  I have rebooted several times and the same issue keeps happening. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Todd

Todd, can you send one of the photos you tried to upload to me
directly via email? That'll help me debug this.

AS a follow up, I tried uploading in IE 10 and the little spinning icons just spun for 30 minutes. There were 7 photos, about 400K each - shouldn't have been a big problem. I have a decent broadband connection. Thx.
