Hi, I am a brandnew curator and need a little help to get started.

I am uploading a list of species and get error messages that these species are not available in the iNat species list, so the upload doesn't work:

Pylaisia selwynii (a moss)   http://eol.org/pages/922922/overview

Rosa dumalis (a flowering plant)  http://eol.org/pages/242532/overview

Sorbus cashmiriana (a flowering plant)  http://eol.org/pages/243319/overview

I was made a curator so I can add these taxa, which are available through an iNat search from uBio, etc.

But in the instructions in the Curator Guide it says there should be a "Create a new taxon link" on the Curation dashboard, but that doesn't seem to exist.  I just see "Curate taxa | Create a new taxon".  I don't want to create a brandnew taxon, I want just to like to these species to get into the iNat database.  What am I missing?

Or, is it as simple that if I just search for these taxa and click on them, then they are automatically added to the iNat list so my list import will work next time?  Some of my observations are the first observations for species on the iNat site, but they are not necessarily uncommon species (like Retinia resinella).

I have about 20 species to add, and most of these are already in eol/ITIS etc, but how do I do this in the simplest way to iNat?  Any clarification would be most appreciated.

Thanks!
Lena

A quick thought, did you try searching external databases first? This often works and is really easy - there's a link when the species isn't found on a search. If you haven't disregard this email, but it seems if they are in EOL this will probably work.

Hi Charlie - yes, I can see the species in external databases, my question is mainly if they get automatically added to iNaturalist after I have found them in the external databases or if I need to do something more.

Best

After you add them from an external database they will be added to the database! It takes a while for them to load in and get properly connected in the taxonomic hierarchy.

THANKS!  That is exactly what I wanted to know.
