Hello,

There was a recent ICZN decision about this species, and instead of Helix aspera, it should be named Cornu apersum.
Can this be changed in iNaturalist?

Thanks!

Subject: [MOLLUSCA] Fwd: Case 3518 Cornu - opinion published

Given the importance of the species involved, I am forwarding this opinion of the ICZN regarding the nomenclatural availability of the genus name Cornu Born, 1778.

I wrote the original application to the ICZN in 2011 simply to try to settle somewhat logically, the "correct" generic name for Helix/Cornu/Cryptomphalus/Cantareus aspersa. I had no preference regarding which genus name should be used, but simply desired to re-introduce some stability to future usage regarding this species.

I appreciate the various comments, both for and against that have been published in the Bulletin of Zoological Nomenclature.

The species should therefore now be referred to as Cornu aspersum (Müller, 1774).

Best wishes to all.

Hi guys,

Just wanted to say that Susan J. Hewitt (invertzoo) has already performed this taxon change, using WoRMS as a reference. However, there have been some problems in the updating process. Please see:

Cheers,
