Should I "Agree" with already Research Grade observations?

Hi,

I'm still finding my feet with iNaturalist and was wondering whether it is good / bad practice to Agree with the ID of observations that are already marked as Research Grade?

From what I can tell an observation will move from Needs id to become Research Grade fairly quickly (after 2-3 users agree on an ID).
Is there anything to gain by having more agreements? I would assume that the more agreements on the ID there are the better?

Thanks
Henry

There is no harm to additional confirmations, if you agree the identification to the same precision.  It protects a little against a rogue identification later.

Best wishes,

Donald

I was wondering about this too since it seems most things only get one confirming id and it could easily be goofed up later by a single wrong added or changed id. In that respect more ids is better. On the other hand though I don't really like getting all the notifications when someone is just agreeing with an already research grade observation that I've added an id to. For that reason I've just starting marking observations that I agree with but that are already research grade as "reviewed". If someone then changes their id on it I won't know though.  Is there a way to set it so people only get notifications for conflicting ids or when the FIRST confirming id makes it research grade? If that were the case I would be more comfortable adding more confirming ids instead of just marking as reviewed, because I wouldn't be bombarding people with notifications.

If you edit your account settings & profile (link on your profile page), there's a checkbox to indicate whether you want to be notified of confirming identifications or not. By default, it is set to notify, but if you do a lot of identifying, it can be good to uncheck it. That way you only get notifications when someone leaves a comment or adds an id that is different from the one you gave.

imho it's definitely valuable to add additional agreements. Unless there are literally like 10 of them already.

Agreed with Charlie. I once had a bunch of my single-agreement observations lose Research Grade when the agreeing user deleted their account, taking all their data off into the ether with them.

I didn't realize user identifications would disappear if they deleted their account. That's too bad. I'm not sure why someone would choose to delete an account. I will start agreeing with research grade ids that I look at instead of just marking as reviewed, and I've adjusted my settings so I won't get as many notifications when other people do the same. I think I might miss getting notifications when my own observations get their first agreeing id that makes it research grade though. If someone adds a comment onto an agreeing identification will that still trigger a notification?
