Hello!

I recently posted a sighting of a Common Raven at Seneca Lake in Guernsey County, Ohio.  I noticed that the status of Raven in Ohio is shown as extinct.  I know that Ravens were extirpated from Ohio years ago, but it has been well known for several decades now that a few birds are nesting again in the SE areas of the state.  A population seems to be pretty well established in Harrison Co. and they are regularly seen in Jefferson County as well.  I have personally seen them in both, and now also in Guernsey and Noble Counties.  In terms of rarity in Ohio, Common Raven is no longer a review bird in terms of the Ohio Rare Bird Records Committee.

Does anyone know how the status would be moved from Extinct to endangered, or some other appropriate status in iNaturalist?  Clearly, they are not extinct, just very uncommon.

Thanks in advance,

Jon Cefus

Hi Jon,

The Extinct status for Common Ravens in Ohio comes from NatureServe, and they admit it might be out of date so I removed it.

If you go to a taxon's page (eg https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/8010-Corvus-corax) and click on Status you can see all the different conservation statuses that are being applied to the taxon. These are sourced from external authorities, iNaturalist doesn't do any of this on our own.

If you think something about a taxon needs to be changed, you can click on "Curation" under the graphs and select "Flag for curation" then briefly describe the issue. A site curator will see that and should investigate.
