When I try to rotate certain pictures, I encounter a strange issue. Most recently this one:
Clicking Rotate Left or Rotate Right makes the site appear to load, but then after loading, 90% of the time nothing has changed. Occasionally it will work, but I can't seem to identify anything I've done differently those times. The problem seems to be identical in Firefox or Chrome, running Windows 7 or Windows 10. Not sure about other OS/Browser/App combinations.

Hi Jeremy,

Are you rotating the photo on your phone/computer before uploading it to iNaturalist?

I had a problem rotating the image at http://naturewatch.org.nz/observations/4723702, you used to get fairly quick feedback with the image showing the new orientation.  I tried rotating it right, then left, then left again.  Nothing changed on screen, even after refreshing the page.  I assumed it was broken and would be fixed soon.  Just had another look, and find the image is now rotated, and upside down, no doubt the cumulative effect of my rotation requests.  I have now just asked it to rotate it twice to the right, nothing has changed on the screen, but I expect that when I come back in a while I will find it rotated.

Now to find the other images that I have tried to rotate, and find what orientation I have left them in with the delayed rotations ;-)

I've yet to be able to rotate an image after I've uploaded it. The scenario is: 1. I upload a photo from the Android app (it is upright on my phone). 2. Sometimes it uploads upright, sometimes sideways; I haven't been able to figure out rhyme nor reason as to why it sometimes uploads it sideways. I can upload the exact same image to Facebook, and it will upload upright. 3. I try to rotate it from my laptop by clicking on the photo, then clicking on "View Details," and then clicking on one of the "Rotate" buttons." It pauses/grays out as if it's doing something, but then nothing ever happens....ever, for me. 4. I end up re-uploading my backed up photos from Flickr, and deleting the ones from my phone that turned out sideways. Very frustrating and a time waster!

I'll just concur that I'm having this problem as well. The Android app used to recognize photo orientation, but now uploads them always (for me) as landscape-orientation, even when the photo was taken vertically.

In the iNat website, if I go to edit the photo to rotate it back to vertical, it seems like it doesn't do anything when I press the button to rotate it - nothing happens. However, with the most recent observation I tried this on I noticed that the thumbnail of my photo got rotated to vertical after a couple hours, even though when I opened the observation, the photo was still landscape. And now, a couple days later, the observation photo is now vertical.

So pressing the photo rotation button in the website DOES seem to do something, albeit very very slowly these days. It would be great if the Android app could be fixed to go back to recognizing photo orientation, though!

Thanks everyone for the discussion. I too use the Android application and am having this problem.
