Why is there no iNaturalist shop/swag?

Hi,

My love of iNaturalist has grown to a level were I would like to share it with others by wearing t-shirts, tote bags, sweaters, whathaveyous. Somebody recently enquired about obtaining stickers.

Hence my question: why doesn't iNaturalist operate a store for this? I understand that nowadays creating a web store complete with payment processing is not that hard and there are readymade and simple options for it. Granted, it would require some work and a bit of cash upfront, but I think that with iNat's large user base, it would be worth it and would generate a nice stream of income for the project.

So, iNaturalist team: why no store?

All the best,

Peeter

Just here to second this. I would buy iNaturalist merchandise in a heartbeat.

Excellent question.  I feel the same way and just use any excuse to bring it up in conversation, on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, or when presenting something else.

Ken-ichi , Scott, and team,

I just recently set-up a "store" as part of my job for almost this type of thing.  I would be more than happy to work with you all and help have it created.  Let me know if this is something that you would like to pursue.

It would be nice. It would offer a way to find others in our area who are interested or might become so. If I wore a t-shirt that said iNaturalist on it, people could come up and talk to me about it.
More complex, but possibly possible would be individualized t-shirts, maybe even given out as prizes, that tell our contribution. I'm the top plant identifier for my county and invested a lot of hours into that. My daughter, who got me into this, is top identifier for California. T-shirts like that would be real advertizing for iNaturalist. It would make it like getting your green belt in aikido. And make it appealing to more people to start using their phone for documenting what they see ... and to start seeing the world around them.

Than you for all the support, everyone, this is definitely something we've been planning on. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

And on a related note, when I was at Cal Academy last month, I was surprised that none of the existing iNat T-shirts or stickers were in the physical store there.  That should be easy.

One really easy way to get started that we're doing at my nature center is to use Bonfire to sell tees; you don't hold inventory and you don't ship - you just collect the checks. Obviously the checks are smaller than if you had the entire margin and owned the process, but then you'd have all the logistics that I'm assuming the admins don't want to worry about.

Here's our "store" and you can see we're just to our second design now, but we've already brought in about $4k this year.

Hi folks,

We want to sell iNat swag too and it's on my list to do before the end of 2018. T-shirts, hats, and stickers are no brainers. What else would you buy? (no promises that we can do it all, but it would be great to hear what you're dying for).

If anyone has recommendations for companies that do print on demand with international fulfillment (preferably in a timely manner) for things like this, please contact me directly.

Best,
Carrie

I would like to request a women's style tee, because regular men's tees really don't fit me -- I am curvy. I would also request that tees be 100% cotton, even though it is more expensive than 50/50 cotton/poly. !00% cotton tends to shrink a bit when washed in hot water, but it never gets stinky under the armpits, unlike cotton/poly.

I would love a really sturdy, preferably indestructible, small ruler i(about 6 inches in length) marked in cm and mm, with a hole in it so it can be suspended on a string from neck or bag.

I would also love a tee and hat  or at least a large lapel button, that say, "MAD SCIENTIST", to explain to passers-by what I am doing most of the time.

Maybe an iNaturalist mug?

I second Susan's request for a small ruler! I think a sturdy, indestructible one is great to offer and I would buy it in a second. I also think offering a bulk pack of thick paper ones that can be handed out during events for things like the City Nature Challenge would be great. Every year I try to figure out a way to print these for NYC, but end up running out of time :)

Something else cool might be some sort of branded universal macro lens. I think you can get custom Easy-Macros (the logo's on the card, not the band) - https://www.easy-macro.com/

Can't wait to see what you all put together, Carrie!

Hey Carrie,

I'd like to have a iNat bag.
It could be a tote bag, beach bag, crossbody bag or canvas string bag.

Best,

Liselle

If I may(aside from an iNat bag), I'd also like to suggest these items:

1. Durable Stainless Steel Tumbler/Water bottle
2. Dry bag
3. Bag tags/luggage tags
4. RFID Passport holder
5. Hoodie

Cheers,

Liselle

Ditto on #1,2,3 below.

I'd also love to see some kind of print brochure that we could hand out that helps guide people toward making good observations, which could eliminate some of the poor data quality issues we've seen from new users.  We could print it - no need to provide anything other than design. We're pushing iNat here but we don't want to contribute to the flood of low-quality observations, especially as we are preparing for an April 2019 bioblitz where we'll involve amateurs alongside our taxon leaders.

Yes! A printable instruction sheet about iNaturalist!!
At the Sun House museum where I volunteer, we recently had a show about wildflowers and climate change, and it suggested that a wonderful thing that people could do to help would be to join iNaturalist! The idea being to get people to be involved in documenting change, and perhaps more importantly, to become aware of the deep beauty of the world. It would be great to have a small handout that would guide folks to become positive contributors. Just something that gives the basics of what INaturalist is and how it ideally works.
thanks

I would hope a print-at-home brochure or handout would be free ;) and so probably unassociated with a shop/swag.

There's a generic version here based on the Getting Started guide: PDF, PPTX, Google Slides. It's a lot of information to shove into one handout; learning the ins and outs of the iNat platform definitely takes a bit of time. :)

And I made this one for my City Nature Challenge minibioblitzes this year--iNaturalist App How-to+Tips/Tricks PDF and Word document (nothing fancy, but it worked for my purposes!)

Tees in the full range of sizes! It's so frustrating when sizes stop at XL, and a *large* percentage of folks in the U.S. wear sizes larger. Must be equally frustrating for folks on the other end of the range.

And, since iNaturalist is all about photos, it would be great if the small ruler was flat gray, to make color adjusting photos easier (and, of course, both inches and centimeters.)

I agree a strong ruler w/ hole would be great (example). And nice lanyard for my loupe/ruler nerd necklace. : )
