Dear ,

with great admiration I've seen your Qgis plugin Inasafe and the advantages it offers.
I'm currently working at the GIS department of an IT company called Mountbatten/Fruits of Thought (www.mountbatten.net /
www.fruitsofthought.org), based in Kampala, Uganda.
We'd like to know more about the possibilities of such a plug-in in Uganda. Uganda is not bordering any seas, but suffers from floodings from time to time due to extreme precipitation, overflowing rivers and (occasionally) Lake Victoria. Furthermore, other environmental hazards concern flooded swamps & wetlands, land & mud slides and extreme heat leading to drought.

I'd like to know if there are any possibilities within Inasafe in which we could practice such scenarios?
Your help would be much appreciated.

Kind regards,
Thijs Kuiper - Advisor Geo-department Mountbatten/Fruits of Thought

Hi Thijs,

You can certainly use InaSAFE to do flood analysis. Key to this is having data. You need two types of data for your analysis.

Hazard Data: You'll need information about flooding. Do you have access to scientific hazard models about flooding in your area?
Exposure Data: Infrastructure or population data. You can use OpenStreetMap or government data if you have it for your infrastructure data. There are also sources for population data such as WorldPop.

A good way to get familiarized with InaSAFE would be to walk through this tutorial here: http://inasafe.org/en/training/socialisation/index.html It should take about 4 hours, but will familiarize you with the types of data you need and how the software works.

Best,

-Kate
