Nicholson and Hunt won the Academy Awards for Best Actor and Best Actress, respectively, making it the most recent film to win both of the lead acting awards, and the first since The Silence of the Lambs (1991). It was also nominated for Best Picture.[2] It is ranked 140th on Empire magazine's "The 500 Greatest Movies of All Time" list.[3]

One day, Melvin's apartment neighbor, gay artist Simon Bishop, starts working with a new model, Vincent Lopiano. Vincent uses the opportunity to case Simon's apartment and allow his friends inside, who assault and nearly kill Simon during the robbery. Simon's agent, Frank Sachs, intimidates Melvin into caring for Simon's Griffon Bruxellois, Verdell, while he is hospitalized. Although Melvin initially does not enjoy caring for the dog, he becomes emotionally attached to it and simultaneously receives more attention from Carol. When Simon is released from the hospital, Melvin is unable to emotionally cope with returning the dog. Melvin's life is further altered when Carol decides to work closer to her home in Brooklyn so she can care for her acutely asthmatic son Spencer. Unable to adjust to a different waitress, Melvin arranges through his publisher, whose husband is a doctor, to pay for Spencer's considerable medical expenses as long as Carol agrees to return to work. She is overwhelmed with, but also suspicious, of his generosity.

Meanwhile, Simon's assault and rehabilitation, coupled with Verdell's preference for Melvin, causes Simon to lose his creative muse and fall into a depression. Since he has no medical insurance, he goes bankrupt due to his medical bills. Frank persuades him to go to Baltimore to ask his estranged parents (who disinherited him for being homosexual) for money. Because Frank is too busy to take the injured Simon to Baltimore himself, Melvin reluctantly agrees to do so; Frank lends Melvin his Saab 900 convertible for the trip. Melvin invites Carol to accompany them on the trip to lessen the awkwardness. She reluctantly accepts, and relationships among the three develop.

After returning to New York, Carol tells Melvin that she does not want him in her life anymore but later regrets her statement and calls to apologize. The relationship between Melvin and Carol remains complicated until Simon (whom Melvin has generously allowed to move in with him since his apartment has been sublet) persuades Melvin to declare his love for her. Melvin goes to see Carol, who hesitantly agrees to try and establish a relationship with him. The film ends with Melvin and Carol walking together. As he opens the door at an early morning pastry shop for Carol, he realizes that he has stepped on a crack in the pavement, but does not seem to mind.

In 1996, James L. Brooks flew Geoffrey Rush from Sydney to Los Angeles to audition for the part of Simon Bishop, and offered him the role, but Rush declined it.[5] Betty White was offered a role in the film but she declined, due to a scene in the film where a dog is thrown into a trash chute.[6]

As Good as It Gets was a box office hit, opening at number three at the box office (behind Titanic and Tomorrow Never Dies) with $12.6 million,[10][11][12] and eventually earning over $148 million domestically and $314 million worldwide.[1] It is Jack Nicholson's second highest earning film, behind Batman.[13]

Praise for the film was not uniform among critics. While Roger Ebert gave the film three stars (out of four), he called the film a "compromise, a film that forces a smile onto material that doesn't wear one easily," writing that the film drew "back to story formulas," but had good dialogue and performances.[15] The Washington Post critic Desson Howe gave a generally negative review of the film, writing that it "gets bogged down in sentimentality, while its wheels spin futilely in life-solving overdrive."[16]

Review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes reports that 86% of professional critics gave the film a positive review based on 85 reviews, with an average rating of 7.30/10. The consensus states: "James L. Brooks and Jack Nicholson, doing what they do best, combine smart dialogue and flawless acting to squeeze fresh entertainment value out of the romantic-comedy genre."[17] Metacritic gave the film a score of 67 out of 100, based on reviews from 30 critics, indicating generally favorable reviews.[18]

The film was released on VHS, LaserDisc and DVD on May 19, 1998. It was released on Blu-ray in the United States on June 12, 2012, as part of Twilight Time's Screen Archives collection. The set was limited to 3,000 units and sold out quickly.[39]

NO SATURDAY OR SUNDAY CHECK-INS. The name of this home says it all. With six bedrooms and four bathrooms this home will comfortably sleep up to 18 people. The beautiful fully furnished kitchen will make cooking meals for your guests a breeze. There is a deck off of the upstairs master as well that allows you to wake up and walk right out to sight of the ocean. There is also a walkover that leads you right to sand. The open concept in this home makes spending time with your family comfortable and memorable. Do not miss out on this beautiful home! Renter must furnish their own paper supplies (including toilet paper) trash bags, cleaning supplies and laundry/dish detergents.

This is a very spacious 6 bedroom house that easily met the needs of our 4 families (13 adults and 2 kids). The kitchen is nice and has everything you need, and has a large refrigerator which was nice. The surround sound was a nice unexpected feature that we enjoyed watching movies in the evenings. Of course the best thing is the beach, and this house is one of the closest to the beach with easy direct access from the house. This part of the beach is not very busy during the week. There is drive on access in this part of the beach, so be sure to get out early on the weekends to claim your spot, it was very busy on Saturday, but no problems. We enjoyed our stay and would defintatly come back to this house.

We enjoyed the location and easy access to beach.
The house was clean and roomy.
To have such a nice place, and ruin it with the smell of the house water supply. It was a terrible sulfur type smell, my wife would not take a shower.
Will not return until a filter is installed.
I would recommend with a warning.

Our family of 10 rented this home for a family vacation. Overall the home had plenty of space. The kitchen was well stocked. It was great to have 4 bathrooms (even though one of the showers did not work) and the location was nice.

Cons: this home needs a lot of routine maintenance/upkeep. The water smelled awful, sort of a mix of iron and sewage. Several boards on the stairs/deck were sticking up and/or had nailheads sticking out. The tile throughout the main living area was loose, broken or coming up in several places. My father cut his toe on one of them. There is a window seal in the den that is rotten. The primary bathtub upstairs was almost rusted through. The door knob to the balcony from the primary does not function, therefore only the deadbolt keeps the door closed. There is no closing the door if you walk out on the balcony. The stairs on the walkover, beachside, need an extra step at the bottom as it is a steep drop off from the bottom step to the sand. Overall, the house was nice, it just needs to be maintained.

I have been vacationing at Surfside since the early 70's. Bluewater has been fantastic all through the years even before they were called Bluewater. The houses always suit us to a Tee and any issues are quickly resolved.

This property was well located, stocked and I simply loved the layout of the house. Many in our group could barely navigate stairs and we had 3 bedrooms on the bottom floor, great!!!!! There were a few problems with the fire alarms going off without any causes but maintenance said they would find the problem as soon as the property was vacant so they could do a thorough check. We enjoyed our stay and the security on the clean beach was wonderful. We will rent this property again and would recommend it to others in a heartbeat!!!!!

We are glad you had a great time overall and we apologize for any inconvenience caused by the fire alarms. We are thrilled that the layout of the house accommodated to you and the your guests. We can't wait to see you again in the future!

House was great. Clean, well maintained and up to date. I have stayed in several others throughout the years and this one is by far the nicest Ive seen. Great location and house floor plan was perfect for our group. My only wish was that the stairs to the beach connected to the deck. Not a deal breaker but would have been nice to not to have to go down and up every time.

I have been coming to Bluewater resorts for the past 14 years. These guys offer some of the best beach front properties on surfside. This house is amazing and our 5th time renting. Plenty of room throughout the entire house and a huge deck to hang out on and watch all that is going on at the beach. The private beach access makes it even more convenient. Look no further foe a house then right here!

This is our second year in a row to stay in this house. We had three families here with small children. Everyone had their own space. We loved the big ocean front deck and the quick access to the beach.
