Then the craving for vampires hit. I wanted darkness and seduction without there being some plot to save the world, or woo multiple men. I just wanted the deliciously dark atmosphere you get when you have vampires.
A fun 2D reimagining of the hit horror game, Dark Deception. This is a free demo of the first level. Super Dark Deception is coming soon to Steam, Epic Games Store, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series SX.
I played the game and I broke the monkey's ankles. I made a yt video. Kinda Laggy because I forgot to turn on my camera so I just re-acted what I did and forgot to turn on audio and also used my screen-recording because I forgot that I used another app for screen recording. my screen-recording that I used on this video makes videos that is longer than 10 minutes laggy.
please update soon. also the AI is too smart. could you also make it so after beating a level you can press q or e to do a random power from the real game while replaying level one? at least until the full game comes out?
full game please i always wanted to play dark deception but never got to cuz i don't have money and this is the only way to do so, please i will be grateful for life if you do so...thanks! also i hope the entire team of itch.io and glowstick entertainment have a nice day
There is a bug that if in a secret room the monkeys will gather at the door, and in some cases, which are probably rare, can glitch through the door. PLEASE fix their AI in the webgl and full game please.
Main Characters Doug Houser Doug HouserI'm not a religious man, but if there is an afterlife, I know what's waiting for me when my time is up. I accept it and I deserve it. Just give me one last chance to right my biggest wrong before I go. I'm not sure that's even possible, but I'd pay any price to find out.
Malak Malak"You've been meddling in my affairs all this time, but I am no ordinary demon. Over countless millennia. I have grown my army and my power with the rivals that I have vanquished and the mortal souls that I have acquired. You could say business has been booming."Phantom Form "Give that back to me, mortal!"Door Form "I'm coming to collect what is owed, and I'm bringing your worst nightmares with me. You and the mortal are both going to pay... with interest."
Nightmare Enemies In General
- Ambiguous Gender: On account of them being once human souls that perished and wound up trapped under Malak's thrall, it's very unlikely all the enemies that aren't singular like Agatha, the Joy Joy Gang, or Mama Bear are all a single gender. Due to E's notes, it's possible even the more masculine-looking Gold Watchers and Clown Gremlins qualify. They're often refered to as "it" rather than any proper pronouns, but they're far too detached from humanity to tell at this point.
- Ax-Crazy: Just about all of the enemies in the game are extremely violent, insane, and eager to kill you. Even the enemies not outwardly crazy will still mutilate and kill you in brutal fashion (also bonus points go to the Gold Watchers, who will laugh as they kill you with an actual ax).
- Berserk Button: Collecting the ring piece (or just getting close to doing it) is enough for them to start taking their jobs seriously and trying more elaborate ways of killing Doug.
- Body Horror: Pretty noticeable in some enemies.
- Demon of Human Origin: The notes left in the nightmares reveal that most of these monsters are the twisted souls of corrupt or tortured humans. Malak confirms in Chapter 4 that while it is not exactly hell (which he deems a "quaint and amusing concept"), the dark dimension is the place where all the evil souls gather, and his minions are human spirits he gathered as his army.
- Played with, however, because the monstrous souls of sinners coexist alongside more traditional demons that never were humans such as Malak or the Joy Joy Gang.
- Evil Is Bigger: All of the bosses (excluding a few) are much bigger than both Doug and the normal nightmare enemies.
- Faux Affably Evil: While all of the enemies are unambiguously hostile to Doug, a fair few of them will stop to casually converse with you at certain points, especially the ones that talk. This completely stops once you collect the ring piece, however.
- Females Are More Innocent: They certainly aren't innocent now, but Agatha and the Reaper Nurses, the first two unambiguously female monsters Doug faces have more tragic origins compared to the others, the former being sacrificed to Malak and the latter being abused women who hate men as a result. Averted full-stop with Penny and Mama Bear, however, who are just as, if not more evil than the others. And that's ignoring the very real possibility that, given what they are, the Monkeys, Watchers, Duckies, Clowns, and so on have plenty of female souls among them too.
- Hell: While the "dark dimension" in which the game takes place is not hell (the demon Malak considers "heaven and hell" to be "quaint and amusing" concepts), it is the closest thing to it as it is an afterlife plane in which all evil souls gather, be they the spirits of dead criminals, inhuman monsters or deal-making demons, and wage war with each other to become "the ultimate evil".
- I'm a Humanitarian: Most of them display this tendency, with Hangry the Pig, Mama Bear and her Trigger Teddies, and the hotel monkeys being the most obvious. Others, however, only display this momentarily in their jumpscares.
- Oh, Crap!: When one takes into account that the power of a ring piece is all that sustains the nightmare realms they inhabit, their entering Nightmare Mode once you've collected all of the Soul Shards (required to collect the ring piece) can be interpreted as this.
- Our Monsters Are Weird: Zig-zagged. They are all based on common horror monsters and tropes, albeit with their flavors of oddity. This is justified to an extent since they're all based on the fears and behaviors of humanity.
- Red Eyes, Take Warning: They all gain these when in Nightmare Mode, which increases their movement speed and general aggression.
- Sadist: Not only are they trying to kill you, but will do so with murderous glee.
- Slasher Smile: Nearly all of the enemies sport these as they hunt down the player.
- Super-Persistent Predator: All of them will attempt to hunt you down once you start collecting soul shards. This goes even further once you get the ring piece, as they start doing EVERYTHING in their power to kill you.
- Tulpa: They're strongly implied to be this, as they all manifest from Doug Houser's various fears and troubled past.
- Turns Red: Once you've collected all of the Soul Shards, all the enemies in the current level will go into Nightmare Mode, becoming much more feral or creepy looking completed with a darker or a Red and Black and Evil All Over color scheme and piercing red eyes.
The main enemies in "Monkey Business". A group of giant wind-up toy monkeys with knives for hands. They are always aware of Doug's location on the map and pursue him relentlessly once they get close enough to him.
- Alliterative Name: Murder Monkeys.
- Ambiguous Robots: At first glance, they look like monstrous monkeys. But then there is the fact that they have metal knives instead of hands and have wind-up keys on their backs. And unlike monsters who are Hostile Animatronics like the Joy Joy Gang or Living Toys like the Dread Duckies and the Trigger Teddies, these guys look very organic. Plus, if you listen closely to their jumpscare sound, you'll notice a robotic tone in their voice.
- Blade Below the Shoulder: They have knives for hands, and since their only goal is to murder you, the drawbacks of not having normal hands don't bother them.
- Cymbal-Banging Monkey: They're larger, wind-up versions of this trope. Instead of cymbals, however, they have sharp knives.
- Demon of Human Origin: In the Enhanced version, a note in one of the secret rooms reveals they're the twisted souls of humans who were violent murderers when they were alive, turned into destructive monkeys because in life they gave in to their animalistic urge to kill.
- The Goomba: Zigzagged, they are the only monsters that are able to be avoided without the use of powers (speed boost, telepathy, primal fear, etc.), in fact, they are actually used as guinea pigs for those last two mentioned powers. However, despite this, they should not be underestimated as they are surprisingly good at tracking down the player and will corner you if you are not careful.
- Living Toys: They're everything you can fear and hate in a wind-up monkey made bigger than a human.
- Maniac Monkeys: Their crazed look and those knives they have for hands should get the idea across.
- Mascot Mook: Very obvious if you know the game and its history. Even outside their level, they make more cameos than other enemies, most often either as level guards, drawings, and cardboard cutouts. Several even appear as caged "animals" at the circus level.
- Monkey Morality Pose: A painting on their stage depicts them doing this.
- Red Is Violent: They wear red bellhop uniforms and are extremely violent.
- Scary Teeth: They have rows of sharp, bloody, crooked chompers. Try not to think too hard about why there's blood there.
- Serial Killer: According to E, in life, they were people who gave into their primal desire to hunt and slaughter simply to sustain their crazed blood lust.
- Starter Villain: They're the first enemies Doug faces, and they make up the entire first chapter.
- Super-Deformed: They have very big heads which seem to seem to be far larger then their own torsos.
- Tulpa: The Monkeys themselves seem to represent how Doug murdered his own family (intentionally or otherwise), while the hotel seems to represent Doug's infidelity to his wife, if his mistress' mention of "monkey business in some hotel" is anything to go by.
- Wind-Up Key: They all have one on their backs which will start to turn when ever they walk.
