King Titus Cromwell and his men land on Tomb Island in search of Xusia of Delos, a long-dead sorcerer who may help overthrow Cromwell's rival, King Richard, whose land of Ehdan is the richest in the world. Using one of Xusia's worshipers to awaken him, Cromwell convinces Xusia to join his cause. With the sorcerer's black magic at his command, Cromwell easily lays waste to Richard's formidable army.

Fearing the sorcerer could turn against him, Cromwell stabs Xusia with a dagger and chases him off a cliff.[4]With only one army left to defend the city, Richard prepares to lead the last-ditch charge against Cromwell. He orders his family to evacuate to the river, and entrusts his youngest son Talon with his triple-bladed projectile sword, instructing the boy to avenge his death should it occur.

While searching the battlefield, Talon comes across Mogullen, his father's closest adviser. Gravely wounded, the old soldier confirms the battle is lost. Talon spies his father in the distance, just seconds before his execution. Enraged, Talon wants to claim his revenge, but Mogullen warns him that Cromwell will head to the river to intercept the queen. Talon desperately races to the river on horseback, but is too late to prevent his mother's death at Cromwell's hands. After narrowly surviving an ambush, Talon manages to evade capture and flee the kingdom.

Eleven years later, Talon returns as a seasoned warrior seeking to avenge his family, even as Xusia vows to repay Cromwell for his treachery. In the city of Ehdan, a rebellion has begun under Prince Mikah, son of Richard's closest adviser, whom many believe to be the rightful heir to the throne. After confirming the final plans with Machelli, Cromwell's war chancellor, Mikah relays the news to his sister Alana, but Cromwell suddenly bursts into their hideout and a battle ensues.

Although Mikah is captured, Alana flees through the city streets, but is eventually cornered by Cromwell's men who attempt to rape her. Talon interrupts and easily dispatches her assailants. At a nearby tavern, Alana learns of her brother's imprisonment and asks Talon to rescue him, along with a faction of rebels who have been trapped by Cromwell's Red Dragon archers. Unable to bribe the lustful mercenary with gold, Alana reluctantly offers herself to him for one night. Satisfied, Talon departs on his mission, but Cromwell's men arrive shortly thereafter and capture Alana as well.

Successful in freeing the rebels, Talon infiltrates the castle through the sewers and rescues Mikah, but is subsequently detected and captured by Cromwell. After forcing Alana to marry him, Cromwell invites four neighboring kings to their wedding feast, where he intends to assassinate them with Talon crucified in the dining hall. Before the plot can be carried out, Talon summons the strength to pull his hands free of the crucifix, just seconds before the rebels, led by Mikah, storm into the hall and overpower Cromwell's soldiers.

Cromwell attempts to flee the castle with Alana, but Talon intercepts them. While he and the rebels clash with Cromwell's guards, Machelli takes Alana to the catacombs beneath the castle, where he reveals his true identity as Xusia. Although Cromwell tries to intercede, he is overmatched by the sorcerer, but Talon is able to resist Xusia's magic powers long enough to strike him down with a projectile blade.

Talon then engages Cromwell in combat, finally slaying the evil king with a spring-loaded blade concealed in his gauntlet. Afterwards, Talon saves Alana from a giant constrictor snake, but Xusia suddenly rises again, prompting Talon to finish off the sorcerer with the same blade.

Having no wish to rule the kingdom himself, Talon yields the crown of Ehdan to Mikah, and Alana honors her commitment to spend one night with her brother's savior. As Talon and the mercenaries prepare to leave Ehdan, Rodrigo, a member of Mikah's rebellion, approaches and asks to join them. Talon agrees, and the group sets off for another adventure.

The film grossed $39,103,425 at the box office, making it the most profitable independent film of 1982.[6] It even spawned a short-lived production line of three-bladed plastic swords in resemblance to Talon's.[citation needed]

Variety gave the film a negative review, citing its lackluster script, lack of acting talent, and fast-paced, "atrocity-a-minute" action scenes.[7] Similarly, The New York Times described it as "nonsensical" and "inept",[8] and Roger Ebert gave it half a star, describing it as "an Identikit movie [which] doesn't care much about character".[9]

After this criticism, the film became a cult classic and is regarded as one of Pyun's best.[10] The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reported that 67% of critics have given the film a positive review based on 12 reviews, with an average rating of 6.10/10,[11] making it Pyun's highest-rated film to date.

Arco Toys in conjunction with Fleetwood Toys made a number of monster figures that included the logo of the film, including a winged man with the head of a lion,[12] and a man with the head of a cobra.[13]

A sequel, Tales of an Ancient Empire (as trailed at the end of The Sword and the Sorcerer), directed by Pyun,[14] was released on January 24, 2012 on DVD.[15] Kevin Sorbo, Victoria Maurette and Lee Horsley starred in the film, the latter reprising the role from the original film.[16] Although Christopher Lambert and Yancy Butler were initially announced to appear in the film, they do not appear.

This movie sure looks great, but I'm not sure I could pass a quiz on what it's about. Maybe it doesn't matter. "The Sword and the Sorcerer" is basically an Identikit movie, in which they start out with a lot of different faces and end up with the usual suspects. We may not be sure precisely what the power relationships are in the movie, but we know there's a young hero and an old king, an ancient villain and a maiden in peril.

There are also a lot of blades in this movie, Also dungeons, passageways, cold roast legs of beef, eyes that glow like embers and a three-pronged sword that holds the key to the kingdom. The movie drips with atmosphere, and I guess atmosphere is what Sword & Sorcery movies are about. They sure aren't about character.

Let's see. So far in the last year, I've seen "Dragonslayer," "Excalibur," and a preview of "Conan the Barbarian." Put them on a quadruple bill with "The Sword and the Sorcerer," and you'd sometimes have trouble figuring out when one ended and the next began.

That's not to say they're necessarily bad; I sort of enjoy medieval swashbucklers. It's just that there are only so many variations you can play on muscles and broadswords, lusty heroes and busty heroines, bearded kings, bizarre panoply, and that old standby, the storming of the citadel.

To give credit where it's due, "The Sword and the Sorcerer" does have two areas of relative originality: Its sword, and its sorcerer. I already mentioned that the sword is three-pronged. That's not all. It has the ability to hurl two of its blades like a spear-gun, and it has a dagger hidden in its handle (it must have been designed by James Bond's munitions man).

The sorcerer is a triumph of makeup, a Incredibly evil old man with a voice from the bottom of a well and a face that looks like somebody left the hot tar out in the rain. I also enjoyed Kathleen Beller's presence as the heroine; she behaves more intelligently than the usual actress asked to pant and heave through these movies, and her character has a neat weapon previously not much used in S&S epics, a knee to the groin.

But when the movie was over, I really wasn't much moved. "The Sword and the Sorcerer" is so dominated by its special effects, its settings and locations, that it doesn't care much about character. It trots its people onscreen, gives them names and labels, and puts them through their paces.

That's not enough. If a filmmaker would just take the time to provide human quirks and foibles for his S&S characters, to give them nice little turns of speech and Identities that we could tell apart and care about, this kind of movie could really be fun. Actually, one filmmaker has done exactly that, only his swords and sorcerers were set in the future: George Lucas, with the "Star Wars" movies.

Anyone can use any weapon. Sorcerors aren't proficient with swords, but that just means that you don't add your proficiency bonus to attacks made with swords. You can still attack with them, they still do the same damage when they hit. You're at a -2 to hit compared to your proficient allies, but maybe that doesn't worry you.

Races. Be an elf: that gets you proficiency with shortswords (all elves) and with longswords (high and wood elves). Or be a variant human, taking Weapon Master as your starting feat. (You can gain proficiency with four of shortswords, longswords, greatswords, rapiers, and scimitars!) Or be a hobgoblin, gaining proficiency in two martial weapons and light armor. Probably there are other ways, too--there're a lot of races out there!

Multiclassing. Take a level in barbarian, fighter, monk, paladin, ranger, or warlock. Given that you're a sorcerer (CHA-based caster) who wants to use a sword (depending on sword, you'll want STR or DEX pretty high), paladin might be the best fit? Though warlock's always worth looking at closely, since Pact Magic behaves uniquely.

This way you can make your one sword attack as well as a "true" martial character. For a few levels. But everyone else using a sword is going to start getting extra attacks, or add sneak attack dice, or smite, or horde-break, or rage, or something. All while you're picking up spell slots and sorcerous abilities.
