The soundtrack of the film includes tracks composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal, with lyrics by Anand Bakshi, who received two Filmfare nominations for these two hits, "Om Shanti Om" and "Dard-E-Dil", Laxmikant-Pyarelal however, won the trophy for Best Music Director of the year. With hits like, "Ek Haseena Thi" and "Om Shanti Om" by Kishore Kumar and "Dard-E-Dil" by Mohammed Rafi, the soundtrack was a trendsetter for disco music in the Indian music industry and film's background score, especially the signature tune are still remembered as one of the most memorable ones.[4] The title track "Om Shanti Om" is inspired by the Lord Shorty calypso song of the same name,[2] while the dramatic "Ek Hasina Thi" resembles George Benson's "We As Love".[5][6][7]

The film's chart-buster song, Om Shanti Om, sung by Kishore Kumar, reached the number 2 spot on Binaca Geetmala's annual list 1980, while another duet between Lata and Kishore, Tu Kitne Baras Ki reached number 13.[8][9]

The film is also one of the finest films of Subhash Ghai, notable for picturisation of songs like Ek Hasina Thi on stage as well as Dard-E-Dil, and set the standard for his future films, as most of them became known for his dramatic flair, and above all their music score.

The songs of the film inspired several film titles, notably Dard-E-Dil (1983), Paisa Yeh Paisa (1985), Main Solah Baras Ki (1998), Ek Hasina Thi (2004), Aashiq Banaya Aapne (2005) and Om Shanti Om (2007), which was seen as a light-hearted tribute to the film, as it borrowed many elements from it.[13]

The film was flagged on 25 January 2008.[2] Filming took place in Mumbai, India and in South Africa. Reshammiya performed his own stunts.[3] On 16 February 2008, Reshammiya had given a live performance in South Africa of the two ultimate dance numbers namely "Sisak Sisak Ke" and "Hari Om". The sound recording was entirely done in Singapore. Reshammiya performed his songs "Lut Jaaon" and "Ek Haseena Thi" at Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2009's first show.

Himesh Reshammiya composed the film's music while Sameer penned the lyrics. The song "Ek Haseena Thi" is taken from the original movie of 1980, Karz, whose music was by Laxmikant Pyarelal. According to the Indian trade website Box Office India, with around 1,300,000 units sold, this film's soundtrack album was the year's eleventh highest-selling.[6]

Rishi Kapoor heartfelt rhetorical -- Tumne kabhi kisise pyaar kiya hai? is revamped to Yeh mohabbat bhi kya cheez hai in the new Karzzzz. And Om Shanti Om [Images] is reborn as Hari Om Hari Om with a wannabe accent. While we admire Reshammiya's brand of kinetic energy, the pumped-up volume but flat content of Hari Om fails to make for a fervent chant.

It must be noted that lyricist Sameer has been rather complacent, penning a rhyming phrase or two and reiterate it endlessly throughout the song. The bland and boring Hinglish ditty, Tandoori Nights, rendered routinely by Sunidhi Chauhan [Images] and Reshammiya, clearly reflects this sluggishness.

Partners-in-nasal rhyme Reshammiya and Tulsi Kumar collaborate next on Soniye je tere and its subsequently re-interpreted mellow version, Tera bina chain na aave. Only both sound like a hastily put together recycled edition of Aafreen tera chehra (Red), Viraniya (Namastey London [Images]) and Allah kare (Ahista Ahista [Images]).

Fortunately, despite an air of familiarity, Dhoom tere ishq ki creates a genuinely melodious and soothing vibe around its listener. Dhoom, basically, tries to re-create a Dard-e-dil moment whilst making a honorable mention (Aur thodi der mein hum juda ho jaayenge) of the original. If you cared for the breezy Mann ki lagan (Paap), there's no reason why this won't catch your fancy.

The pleasantries are short-lived when Reshammiya gets down to gruffly growling on the maniacal albeit mundane beats of Sisak sisak ke. Synthetic sounds and superficial compliments dominate the bumpy excuse of desi-fied slow rock, Masha allah.

And for the grand finale, Reshammiya offers you his version of the iconic Ek hasina thi and its unforgettable guitar play. To his credit, Reshammiya is surprisingly un-nasal while Shreya Ghosal is strictly alright. The remix, on its own, is audibly overwhelmed and conscious by the original's larger-than-life melodrama and magnificence to deliver anything new or pay just ode to L-P's hard-hitting original.

The accompanying CD is chockablock with club and lounge remixes, which are sufficiently bouncy in nature, electronic in sound and foot-tapping in response.

Being a Himesh Reshammiya [Images] soundtrack, it's bound to find its share of buyers and admirers. If only Karzzzz wasn't burdened with the presence of SO MANY songs. It tends to get unbelievably tedious after a point. On second thoughts, the extra Zzz's, in the title, finally begin to make sense.

Rediff Rating:

I started with Oodli Chunariya, and then moved to haunting melodies through Humraaz, got back to completely Indian stuff through Tere Naam. Later, I targeted the discos and night clubs with songs like Mohabbat hai mirchi and Janab-e-ali. After that was done, I targeted the contemporary sufi through Aashiq banaya aapne and Aapka suroor.

I am doing four films as an actor back to back. When I am doing those films, and producing 50 songs a year and at the same time, I am not producing anything outside, I have to use my own voice. Kailash Kher is singing one song, and I have used his voice for sasurji's character (father-in-law).

Shorty's 1978 album, consequently, was called 'Soca Explosion'. One song from the album, in particular, stoked controversy because of its use of a Hindu chant in the chorus line. The song, 'Om Shanti Om' has the lyrics,

Now, having listened to both songs, listen to Lord Shorty himself, in an interview with Sookram Ali for Caribbean Tempo 105FM. At the 2-hour and 5-minute mark, as Shorty's Om Shanti Om plays in the background, here's what is being spoken:

Lord Shorty: It's the same song. It's what you call an infringement of copyright. Kishore Kumar came to Trinidad along that time. I was invited to a farewell party and I went and presented one of my albums. And the next thing is this song comes out as 'Om Shanti Om', but his name and two people's name is up on it, and they are not mine, who is the composer of this song. I complained to the PRS about it and they wrote back and said that India is a law unto itself and it is impossible for them to go into India to collect my royalty because this thing has sold millions.
