I then asked why they even conducted panel interviews at all. The leader told me despite these problems, they were still better than having one-on-one interviews. (Can you imagine what these are like?)

When organized properly, panel interviews are a great tool for saving time, giving weak interviewers an opportunity to participate, avoiding hiring mistakes including hiring someone who normally would have been excluded, and increasing assessment accuracy. Poorly organized panel interviews are a waste of time. The key is to know the job and recognize the different roles leaders and fact-finders play. Panel interviews are truly a team sport, but in too many cases they resemble the first AYSO soccer game played by a bunch of five-year-olds.

These days, the allure of business ownership has never been stronger. Many are trading the traditional 9-5 grind for the freedom and excitement of entrepreneurship. While a stable job offers security, there are compelling reasons why owning a business can be a more fulfilling and advantageous path.

In the United States, the entrepreneurial spirit thrives with over 33 million small businesses shaping the nation's economic landscape. These enterprises, ranging from local boutiques to tech startups, embody the dreams and ambitions of individuals who relish the freedom and autonomy of being their own bosses.

For many, the allure of setting your own schedules, pursuing your passions, and directly impacting your communities outweighs the challenges that come with business ownership. The number of small businesses not only highlights a robust culture of innovation and resilience but also underscores the diverse and dynamic nature of the American economy.

One of the most significant advantages of owning a business is the potential for unlimited income. Unlike a 9-5 job, where your salary is often capped, running your own business allows you to directly benefit from your hard work and creativity. Your earnings are tied to your effort and ingenuity, giving you the chance to build substantial wealth.

As a business owner, you have the freedom to make decisions and steer your company in the direction you envision. This level of control is empowering and allows you to implement your ideas without the need for approval from higher-ups. In contrast, a 9-5 job often involves adhering to decisions made by others, which can be frustrating for those with entrepreneurial spirits.

Owning a business provides the flexibility to create a schedule that works for you. Whether you're a night owl or an early bird, you can structure your workday to suit your lifestyle. This flexibility is particularly valuable for parents, caregivers, or anyone seeking a better work-life balance. While running a business can be demanding, it offers the possibility to prioritize what's important to you without being confined to a rigid schedule.

Starting a business allows you to pursue your passions and interests. When you're passionate about what you do, work becomes more enjoyable and fulfilling. This sense of purpose can be a powerful motivator, driving you to overcome challenges and achieve your goals. In a traditional job, aligning your career with your passions can be more difficult, as roles and responsibilities are often predefined.

The journey of entrepreneurship is filled with learning opportunities. From mastering new skills to solving complex problems, business ownership fosters personal and professional growth. You'll develop resilience, adaptability, and a diverse skill set that can be applied to various aspects of life. In contrast, a 9-5 job may offer fewer opportunities for broad-based growth, often limiting development to specific areas.

Owning a business gives you the chance to create something lasting. Whether it's building a family enterprise, developing a brand, or contributing to your community, entrepreneurship allows you to leave a legacy. This sense of accomplishment and impact is something that a traditional job might not offer, as your contributions often remain within the confines of the organization.

As a business owner, you'll have countless opportunities to forge valuable connections with clients, partners, and fellow entrepreneurs. These relationships can open doors to new opportunities, collaborations, and even friendships that can enrich your personal and professional life. The entrepreneurial community is often supportive and inspiring, providing a sense of camaraderie that is sometimes harder to find in a traditional workplace. These networks can be crucial for business growth and personal development, offering insights, support, and motivation along your entrepreneurial journey.

The bottom line is that while business ownership comes with its risks and challenges, the potential rewards make it a compelling alternative to a 9-5 job. The freedom, flexibility, and opportunity for personal growth and financial success are just a few reasons why entrepreneurship might be the right path for you. If you have a vision and the drive to see it through, owning a business can be a highly rewarding journey.

Up until recently, recycling has been a great method of addressing plastic pollution in our society. It allows us to get a few more uses out of a product or material rather than simply just throwing it away. But realistically, material can only be recycled once or twice before it is of too low a quality to be recycled again. And, products made from recycled materials are usually of a lower quality than were the original products. Compostable bioplastics provide the opportunity for products to be remade indefinitely, creating a fully circular economy for packaging and other products. Here are 10 reasons why compost is better than recycling:

4. Minimum wage laws discriminate against unskilled workers in favor of skilled workers, and the greatest amount of discrimination takes place against minority groups, like blacks. Milton Friedman called the minimum wage the most anti-black law in America.

5. Adjustments to total compensation following minimum wage hikes will disadvantage workers in the form of reduced hours, reduced fringe benefits, and reduced on-the-job training, and a lower quality work environment.

6. Many unskilled workers will be faced with reduced employment opportunities because of minimum wage laws and will be denied valuable on-the-job training, and the opportunity to acquire experience and skills.

7. Minimum wage laws prevent mutually advantageous, voluntary labor agreements to take place at whatever wage is mutually agreeable, which sometimes could be as low as $0.00 an hour for an unpaid internship that provided valuable on-the-job training and work experience.

9. Market wages are efficient and market-clearing, whereas government mandated wages are inefficient and create distortions in the labor markets that prevent market-clearing and lead to surpluses.

10. If you trust government officials and politicians to set a minimum wage for unskilled workers, you should logically trust those same bureaucrats and politicians to set all prices, wages, and interest rates in the economy. Inevitable result: Soviet-style central planning, command-and-control, and economic chaos like in Cuba, North Korea, and Venezuela. If you agree that economy-wide central planning and price controls would be undesirable, then I think you should also agree that the minimum wage law, as an arbitrary, artificial, government-mandated price control is undesirable. There are better ways to help unskilled workers than a distortionary government price control.

Raw honey and refined white sugar are both sweeteners and are both calorie dense foods. But when feeding your sweet tooth, there is no question that raw honey is better for you than white sugar. Here are 5 reasons why:

A few years ago, a customer stopped by our place to buy some honey. As we were chatting, he mentioned that he had stopped eating white sugar, and had replaced it with honey. With this one change, he had lost 10 pounds over the course of a year. This is an interesting result, given that 1 tablespoon of white sugar contains 49 calories, while 1 tablespoon of raw honey contains 64 calories. But because honey has a sweeter taste, you can use less in your food and therefore consume fewer calories overall.

Raw honey and white sugar are both carbohydrates. And they both contain two primary sugars: fructose and glucose. But white sugar is 100% sugars (50% fructose and 50% glucose), while raw honey is about 85% sugars with fructose and glucose ratios that vary with each honey variety. The remaining 15% of honey is water, pollen and trace nutrients. Because of this different makeup, white sugar is absorbed into the body and blood at a faster rate than honey. Sugar absorption is measured by the glycemic index (GI). White sugar has a GI of 65, while most floral varieties of raw honey have a GI that ranges from 35 to 55. This means that raw honey will provide more even levels of energy, over a longer period of time, as compared to white sugar. Generally, raw honey with a higher percentage of fructose as compared to glucose will have a lower glycemic index. In addition, these higher fructose honey varieties, such as tupelo honey, will crystallize at a slower rate as compared to other raw honey varieties that contain more glucose.
