It helps a lot if your residency program is well structured and residents in each year of training know what exactly their learning goals are. Sadly, this may not be the case with many programs and most fresh residents are confused where to start and which direction to head in.
The idea behind this blog is to provide advice on aspects related to residency training. It is not intended to be an exhaustive guide on all matters, rather it aims to answer some of the most gnawing questions that residents face in their day-to-day lives. With proper guidance, you can reclaim the love of your life: orthopaedics!!
Another classical textbook, this book gives a good overview of orthopaedic conditions, including traumatology. Although not sufficient to cover the orthopaedic curriculum, the book can serve as an excellent overview to first year residents and also at the time of exit exams, when the reader needs just an overview of the subject. Highly recommended to first year residents to read and finish within the first year itself.
Written by Ronald McRae, this book beautifully illustrates the orthopaedic clinical examination. Step by step illustrations make clinical examination easier to understand and perform. All commonly performed orthopaedic tests (and some uncommon ones too) are covered. The book also offers tips on history taking, making differential diagnosis and performing common outpatient procedures, including injection and joint aspiration techniques. Interpretation of radiographs is included and a self assessment quiz is offered at the end of each chapter. This book may be read alone or in conjunction with another clinical textbook, for e.g. Clinical Surgical Examination by S. Das or Orthopaedic Clinical Examination by Stanley Hoppenfeld.
Although it is an old book and there have been no recent additions, this book describes some of the commonly used traction and splint devices. Skeletal traction, skin tractions, Crutchfield or Gardner-Wells tongs traction are amongst the few topics that are worth reading. Other chapters may be read as per the needs and the protocols followed in your institution. Although many people would consider it as an optional textbook, I believe it is worth reading at least once. A word of caution though, you may not find it from your local bookseller. Better to search your library!
A must-have book for all residents, although first year residents can read this book selectively. The initial chapters on bone healing, bio-mechanics and principles of fracture treatment should be read by the end of first year.

The practical training in the outpatient department and in individual wards is carried out on an individualised one teacher - one student basis with a focus on the basic practical skills. The training in the operating theatre is carried out in the form of assisting during surgery.
