Stanchion Base Set Screws

Hi,

I have a few stanchion bases which don't have a set screw in place to help hold the stanchion.   They appear to be 1/4".  I have tried 1/4" x 20 and 1/4" x 28 and neither threads in.  Does anyone know what the proper size might be?  Is possible the female threads are just stripped?  Thanks for any advice.

On N33 #8 the stanchion set screw size is #10-24. The hole is through both the cast aluminum base and the stainless steel tube. I think the threads are continuous through both the cast base and tube.

Paul:  Take a screw out of one of the other bases and use it to match what you need at a place that sells lots of SS hardware.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for your question,  it motivated me to look at Soave's stanchions.  I thought it would be easy to remove one of the screws and measure it.... turns out this is yet another place ( on a Nonsuch ) where stainless fuses with aluminum if not adequately isolated.  I tried to remove a few of the set screws on Soave without any luck.

( HERE ) is a photo.... the white powdery stuff around the head of the set screw indicates removal will probably be harder than usual.

Added this to my long list of maintenance to-do's.

Several of mine were stripped but responded well to replacement with short SS sheet metal screws. The metal in the station tube itself is very thin and prone to stripping.

Thank you all for your advice. Ward was correct - they are #10-24 on my NS33 #15.  I have a two bases where someone has tried to remove them and broke the well-corroded machine screw off.  I'm not sure when I will get the gumption to take those on.

There is plenty of room to abandon the existing hole and drill/tap a new hole either in line with the old or at some other location on the perimeter of the cast aluminum base fitting. Install the new screws with plenty of tefgel.

I drilled mine out with a left hand drill bit and then used a a 10/24 bottoming tap to clean up the holes for new screws.
