Hello all,
Our boat is finally on the hard for the winter and my next upgrade is
replacements for the 1983 cockpit cushions. I have seen a few boats
(not Nonsuches, but Anomaly has them) with Bottomsiders cushions
(closed cell foam with permanent laminated vinyl coverings - no
upholstery). Have checked their website and the patterns for Nonsuch
26 (they have 3 available) but don't seem to match my cockpit layout
(port and stbd: long forward cushions, short aft cushions over the
lazarettes with hinge cut-outs; and a helm seat over the propane
locker. Also, I'm interested in a back cushion across the transom
coaming.

Has anyone in our Nonsuch fleet had these cushions made for a 26
Classic? I'd be interested in your comments, and if you used one of
Bottomsiders standard patterns, or supplied you own template.

Many thanks,
Greg Silver

Hi Greg;
I have the closed celled cushions you are looking for.
They came with the boat when I purchased it so I couldn't tell you where they came from.
They were in perfect like new condition when I got them.
All I can add is that Now that I've had them, I wouldn't be without .

La Reina came with 2 Bottomsiders. They fit perfectly and run from the
cabin and stop just before the side lockers. They do not match any of
the patterns that Bottomsiders show on their web site. I suggest you
contact them and get the pattern material and make your own patterns.
That way you will get what you want. I suspect the ones we have are
getting close to 30 years old. They are nearing the end of their
life. When I get new ones I will use the old ones for a pattern.

I am considering the helmsman seat however I am a short guy and need a
lot of boosting to be able to see over the cabin top when I am
sitting. The depth of cushion they offer is not deep enough. I don't
know if they would make one deep enough. I currently use three
floatation cushions in a custom made cloth case with a sport seat
strapped on top.

HI:

I just a month ago took delivery of those exact cushions for my 26C -
so call bottomsiders and tell them you want the same ones i got. they
did not have the split side cushions, so they sent me paper patterns -
i traced and cut and photographed for good measure and they produced
perfect cushions, including the cutout for the hinges. sadly we only
got to use them once the last sail of the season. i'm looking forward
to sleeping on them next year!

I did a bit of searching on the web last night. It appears that insect
repellant containing Deet and some sun lotions may cause the stripes
to bleed. C-Cushions have the same problem. I had not noticed this
with the old ones but in the rainy Pacific North West we don't use
much insect repellant or much sun lotion.

While on the topic, we blame insect repellant for crazing the plastic windows on our dodger, bimini and the screen on the Chart Plotter. Exercise caution even when those flies are nipping!

How do the closed cell cushions that Bottomsiders sells compare to
more traditional cockpit cushions? I've seen their ads, but have not
seen their cushions in person. Morgan did not come with any cushions
and I've been thinking about adding a set.
Thanks,
Jim

Further to my query to the list of a few days ago about Bottomsiders cockpit cushions:
I contacted the manufacturer on line and they promptly sent me dimensioned patterns from their files (and Kate Herman's N26 Sea Rose) to check against my cockpit, and they also quoted  promptly on additional items like a custom backrest for behind the helm seat. Thanks to everyone for your input - everyone who uses them that wrote me had only good things to say about these cushions - 1" thick closed-cell foam, with laminated vinyl coverings, in a wide range of colours, custom cut to fit your layout.

Hi Greg,

I had CC Cushions on our Nonsuch 30 (competitor to Bottom Siders) and
have them now on Anomaly. For both, I sent them paper patterns. You
want to consider how they divide for storage and also access to the
cockpit locker and helmseat. I like the closed cell foam better than
fabric covered cushions, they seem to be durable and dry more quickly.
Not as obvious, they are "sticky" and you do not slide on them, nor do
they slide on the seat - at least until things get pretty extreme.

On both my 30 and on Anomaly, I had the helmseat section humped up in
an arc about 6 or 8" high. That does two things: raises your seated
position when motoring, and gives you an arc to sit on to windward of
center and more upright when heeled. I have been happy with it both
times.

One characteristic of the closed cell foam is that it has quite a long
memory. If you store them for a few weeks standing on end for example,
they will shorten by an inch or so and this persists for several days.
Also the vinyl covering sticks to itself somewhat tenaciously, you
must peel them apart like tape after they have been stored together
(particularly in a humid climate). This does not seem to cause them
any problems, just a curiosity.

Hope things are going well with you in St. Peter's!

Jon

Thanks Jon.
I admired the cushions on Anomaly. I am now in the process of ordering from Bottomsiders who have good templates on hand for my particular layout. All's well in St Peter's. Misty Cat is hauled, and the Yngling is next on the list after November sailing is done. Hope you had a good tour on the Eastern Seaboard!

Jon,
In hot weather, do people stick to the cushions too? I've never seen
these but I'm just picturing the old style vinyl seats that cars used to
have...

Greg,

New to the discussion group but not new to sailing. Over the years I
have had or been exposed to all the different types of cockpit
cushions out there. The Bottomsiders are pretty, but present sweating
problems and if not secured tend to slide around a lot. In my opinion
a closed cellfoam covered with Phifertex is the best type of cockpit
cushion. They are Pricey, but well worth it.

Personally, I find the folding chair/cushions sold by West Marine to be very versatile for the cockpit. I use them in the chair mode most of the time but, can lay them out flat to be used as cushions with guest or if I want to take a little cockpit nap.

I too have used them for years. Very comfortable and can be moved almost anywhere. During long leisurely reaches I have even sat in them up front with the back resting against the mast and read a book while keeping watch.
