I just checked my deck fill O rings and they are very tired – did not even want to remove one for fear of it crumbling – does anyone know the size I need to replace them? (Guessing dash-number 029 but would like to confirm that) – ID would be close to 1½ ”.

Bill,
I just brought one of my very tired O rings to the auto parts store (NAPA) and the replacements they gave me were a bit thicker but they fit nicely. Sorry, I did not get the measurements.

Thanks Rick – tried that this morning but the ones I got must be too thick in cross section because they leave the deck fill cap much too proud on the deck. The NAPA guy had no idea of the spec for what he sold me! I will try again at a different store; maybe they won’t be so clueless…
When I was fitting the replacement, my old O-ring crumbled into bits – not the end of the world for the water fills or waste fitting, but could be nasty with the diesel fill. I will be checking these rings far more often in future!
Cheers,

Right, Bob – looks as if the best thing to do is simply take the fill cap with an intact O-ring to such a store and let them match it – I am also thinking that the diesel ring has to be impervious to diesel, which may not be the case for all rings that fit! So better have someone knowledgeable handle this, as you suggest.

Subject: RE: Deck-fill O ring
size?
Bill i had the same problem a few years ago-- I was real fearful of water finding its way into the diesel deck fill. I had read that a good location was your heighbourhood Caterpiller Dealer as there are so many hydrulic lines in that kind of equipment ,and they were right on. I took one of the fill caps to the parts dept. to match size.
Hi Bill,
Among other things I used to sell o-rings and if I were closer to you I have the gauges to tell the correct size… sorry I can’t be of more help. I can tell you that Viton o-rings are impervious to diesel fuel, standard Buna-n rubber is fine for the water fill caps. I’ve replaced mine some time ago but I can’t recall what size they are. Two dimensions define the size of an o-ring: its inside diameter ( ID ) and its cross-sectional diameter ( CS ), a caliper will give you this dimension, dimensions will be in either millimeters or inches, the outside diameter is determined by these two dimensions. Bob Jenkins gives good advice, a Caterpillar dealer is a great source if you have one near you. After you have replaced your o-rings, lubricate them occasionally with an o-ring lubricant, which most hardware/plumbing stores should carry.

Thanks, Dick – we have a truck centre here in town that has a CAT logo (among others) on its sign, so I’ll bring in my cap and see if they will sell me something appropriate.

Hi Bob,
Yes, that is one lubricant base that’s very effective… here’s a link to a very good lube that should take care of MANY lubrication needs including o-rings we’d have on our boats.

Dick
