We recently got the rebuild kit for the Wilcox-Crittenden Imperial 51 head. We're having a hard time figuring out how to get the camshaft out of the inlet valve. It doesn't seem to want to budge. Does anyone know what the secret is to getting the camshaft to come out?

Thanks,
Amy & Carl

Hi Amy;
I rebuilt mine 2 or 3 years ago, but do not remember if I removed the camshaft.

However, I did wire brush the paint off, and coat the underlying bronze with a few coats of clear lacquer.

Now....I can relax on the "Gold Throne".

When I purchased Serenity II, she came with a non functioning Wilcox
Crittenden Head. At the suggestion of Peggy Hall, the "Head mistress"
@ Sailboat owners .com I replaced the Wilcox with a Raritan II.
Apparently Wilcox has been bought out by Dometic and replacement parts
are at a premium. You can use the wilcox porcelain bowl on a
Raritan II and significantly decrease the price of a total new head.
Raritan is very highly rated by Practical Sailor and recommended by
Peggy in her book on eliminating head odors.

I replaced mine with a composting head (AirHead). One of the best decisions I've made.

I really like my rebuilt W-C WC.  (LOL)

Particularly after I wire brushed the bronze and sprayed it with clear lacquer.
It is an exceptionally well built (bullet proof) head.

A composting head is definitely on my wish list. How did it fit in? Any hints or tips? I'll have to check out the Airhead. Thanks.

I am about to replace my head with a composting head. After much
research I've decided that the Airhead, despite the fact that it is
more expensive than either the Nature's head or the C-Head is the way
to go. After discussions with all three companies it appears that the
Airhead meets the requirements of the 30 U best. I have had excellent
advice and help from members of the Nonsuch Forum in making my
decision. I'm looking forward to the additional space for storage,
once the holding tank is removed. Anybody need a hardly used
macerator pump?

Hello Amy & Carl,

I am also in the process of rebuilding my Wilcox 51 head.  I also had a challenge getting out the camshaft from the inlet valve.  It seems that the stuffing is keeping it in.  I made sure to leave the lever arm and nut attached to the shaft and pryed a bit with a screw driver.  The stuffing came out like thick wax.  After I loosened it, I was able to remove the lever (unscrewing the set screw) and pull out the camshaft.

I will be stripping, wire brushing and lacquering the bronze.

Question to the person who posted earlier on this thread, did you spray on the lacquer only after you reassembled?

Hope this helps!

Hi Joe and Lisa;

I sprayed it.
It has now been 3 years and it still looks good.
Just remember to get ALL the paint before lacquering.
You cannot go back later and get any missed spots.

I also handled the parts as little as possible after brushing to try to reduce the amount of body oils on the surface.  I figure that this will promote better lacquer adhesion.

Who doesn't want to sit on a Gold Throne eh?  LOL

Congratulations. If you care to share your experience installing the airhead I'd love to follow along. I'm about 80% ready to make the move too.
