About 6 years ago I measured the length of the cockpit (actually the length of the seats) of a 30U and 30C that were for sale. My notes indicated the 30C’s seats were ever so slightly longer—something 1.5 to 2.0 inches. Not something you’d notice without a tape measure.

Could have been something unique to those two boats or I may have mismeasured but that’s what I found.

I can confirm this too - I don't have the actual dimensions but the 30C is slightly longer. C-Cushions down in Houston have both cockpit sizes in their internal job catalog so a quick call to them could furnish the actual dimensions. The other aspect that is different between the 30C and 30U is that the cockpit locker hatches are not proportionally the same size between the two but I can't remember which is larger U or C.

Quick plug for C-Cushions - purchased a set for our NS30C a couple of years ago - their service was great and we love the product - I hear they had some trouble after the hurricanes this year so could use our support.

I assume the locker hatches are larger on the ultra. Because the ultra does not have quarter berths like the classic does, the ultra’s lockers are cavernous.

We don’t call them lockers on our ultra, we call them holds. At 6’6” and 220lbs I can disappear below to do engine or battery work. It is amazing how much stuff can be carried including folding chairs and folding bicycles...

Happy Holidays to all.

I have been reading with interest, about cockpit size. We all know that size matters so I decided to do some homework to assist in the subject matter. The attached drawing is not proportionately correct but it looks pretty. The numbers are reasonably correct. If I am of a quarter of an inch off here and there, please don't holler at me too much . I am still recovering from my broken leg and it was difficult crawling around a Classic and an Ultra to get these measurements. Plus it was bitter cold with strong winds. Let's have a pity party. I used Karen's and my 1983 Classic #196 and Ed and Mary Bahniuk's Ultra #503. for comparison. I can only imagine that there may have been subtle changes over the years. My boat is so old that I heard Adam and Eve were the second owners, while Ed and Mary's boat is much newer. It's hard to call a Nonsuch "newer" isn't it?

You will find that there is another attachment that offers some of my conclusions. They may not be worth a lot but, by golly, they are mine.

I have been told that size does not matter, so if your looking for a Nonsuch 30, just buy it.

Butch

Good work Butch. You have definitively answered the question of relative cockpit size of the NS 30C/30U.

Butch,
broken leg, strong winds, bitter cold and you still went out to measure. That is dedication.

Butch -

You take care of that leg, y'hear ??!!

Best of the season and the new year.

Ernie A. up here in Toronto where it is REALLY cold (mind you, we got 8 inches of snow, not counting the wind. ERIE, PA, just down the road got THREE feet of snow.)

Keep warm and have a mulled wine.

Nice comparison notes Butch. Thank you. Will probably refer to it sometime in the future...but so far the 22 with a tiller is still working for us.

Best wishes for the New Year to everyone.

Butch,
I have read your conclusions on Cockpit size with great interest. I believe they should be mandatory reading for the significant others of all Nonsuch captains. Your logic is irrefutable and leads inexorably to the purchase of both the Classic and the Ultra. The Ultra is towed behind to insure an adequate supply of ice cold beer (since it is being towed the motor can generally be used to supply power to the over sized fridge). The Classic cockpit is there for lounging while drinking the cold ones picked up from the Ultra. Some may consider making a catamaran out of the two vessels so the junior members of the crew could simply walk over for a fresh supply of beer however that is less nautical and fails to develop proper character which junior officers can develop by rowing over to pick up a fresh ice cold supply. I encourage use of a short tow line and a cooler in the dinghy. Wouldn’t want the crew to upset the beer by rowing too quickly.

P.s. the snow out here is melting and there is sun in the forecast for January 1 so a sail may be in the cards.
Happy New Year
