Last year I installed a Standard Horizon GX-2200 VHF in the forward cabin with a remote speaker/mic at the helm:

I'm trying to figure out the best location to install it on my NS-30U. My current thinking is strapped to the front part of the mast in such a way that it can be removed in the fall when I un-step the mast. Any other ideas as to location mounting are welcome.

I can almost guarantee that at some point your halyard will snag itself on that speaker if located on the front of the mast.  What will it be used for, Mike??

Probably yelling at Jet skiers who go too fast through the mooring field. :)

Actually, it is multipurpose:
1) It's a PA/Hailer
2) Horn
3) Fog signal
4) Intercom with the helm position. Though I sail solo most of the time

I installed the same one this Spring. Instead of a permanent mount I bought this portable mount meant for car dashboards since we seldom use it. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0772CR74K/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Then I added a longer cord to the horn and a plug on the end that connects into a flush-mount port, which is installed under the VHF radio. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08CRL229T/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

When needed I can pull it out, plug it in, and set it on top of the companionway hatch for use. Probably not great in heavy weather but then I'm probably not on the water in that case.

I had a horn-type speaker installed high up on the mast of Nonsuch Luck. It and the main halyard had some sort of thing going on between them such that at every opportunity the halyard would get wrapped on the wrong side of the horn; it was a devil to get off.  In the end, I removed the horn, end of problem!

I'm not sure I can see how the main halyard would wrap around a PA speaker located on the bow side of the mast. My boat's halyard is either attached to the sail or secured to midship deck area.. There is always some tension on it. I never had the main halyard get caught on the the navigation lights that are already mounted there. I also planned to mount the speaker fairly low on the mast so I could easily remove it at the end of the season before pulling the mast. What am I missing?

Mike,

I was on your side of this debate in a thread sometime back, unable to picture how a halyard could tangle around something on the front of the mast while others insisted it could happen.

When I switched from N26C #183 to N26U #233, which has a radar installation, I discovered that they were right and I was wrong.     The risk can be amelioriated by always keeping the halyard secured at both ends.  However, there are always circumstances which can arise, such as when the halyard's attached to the sail but the sail isn't yet raised and a combination of wind and sea conditions cause the sail to rise just enough for slack to form.  At which point, Murphy's Law kicks in.

You may decide, as I have thus far with my radar, that it doesn't happen often enough and can be lived with.

Alternatively, unless having it really high's important to you, maybe you could mount it on the bow pulpit somewhere that doesn't interfere with anchor handling?

It usually happens with too much slack and going downwind.

The lines are free to wander wither or nither if given enough slack. I suppose it’s the same with a stern mounted radar. Someday some brilliant designer will produce a usable, light and superior mast top mounted radar.

I fear there may be many this side of the pond not familiar with your quip, you may be called upon to elucidate.

Thanks all for the advice on mounting the PA horn. Looks like I'll have to experiment with locations. One I was thinking of was attaching it to the front of the head dorade box. Though it might make carrying the Porta Bote dingy on deck a little more difficult. Bow pulpit may be another location. I'm thinking it might be best as far forward as possible especially when using it in a fog signal mode. Making it little quieter for those on board.

Indeed, Jim. In case it is not obvious, the solution is to give it plenty of slack and rotate the boat so that the wind swings the halyard around the radar, then tighten up quickly when free of the obstruction. A boat hook can be used to guide or free the rope if necessary.

Mike, did you want a permanent mounting location or only when fogging around? If the latter, I mounted my horn (hooked up to a combo fog signal / PA radio) on the lower part of the pulpit via a nylon mounting bracket as to remove when not in use. The wire (and connector)  passes through the chain howser and connects to the Permanently mounted female base.
I find the advantages are , being able to hear in front of the boat (no feedback) and it doesn’t scare the crap out of me when it goes off every two minutes. Regards, Gary / Aloki

That sounds like a good option. My plan was to keep it mounted during the season and remove it over the winter. I too wanted to have it mounted as far forward to minimize loud sounds in the cockpit and forward bunk.

Hi Lloyd. I have the Milwaukee set up and would be happy to discuss my experience with you and may be looking to sell it as well.  If you’re interested, I could provide an email address or phone number and we could converse that way.

Hi Lloyd,

A 28v Milwaukee RA drill and winch bit is available at Milwaukee Winch Bit Package (bvispeedservices.com)I think you can buy the bit separately.

Last year I bought a Milwaukee M-28 right angle drill and a winch bit.  The drill/bit works great for raising the halyard but is a bit cumbersome to use it on the other winches.  So, this season I bought an e-wincher which is lighter and easy to use as a winch handle.  But is much more expensive than a right-angle drill.  I posted my drill on the INA website marketplace.
