Hey folks, these tiny clusters of black dots have appeared in few areas on my deck (only in the nonskid textured areas). A yellow deck brush and the pink west marine soap doesn't do much. Any ideas about what it could be and how to remove it?

Hi Robin, hope your NS30 is treating you well!

Being a pool owner in Las Vegas, it might be black algae, particularly given all the moisture of the last months in northern California.

You might try in order of strength
1) white vinegar
2) diluted muriatic acid (pool acid HCl)
3) full strength muriatic acid

Muriatic/ pool acid is available from Home Depot in gallon plastic containers

Caution: these are highly corrosive. These should be handled only with rubber gloves. It should not affect the deck paint.

When done, sprinkle baking soda to neutralize any remaining acid

Hi Robin, those black dots are algae. Vim with bleach will work. If it’s really bad (like ours) a good power washing will do the trick. Watch your lines though.

You should be able to find "pickling vinegar" or "cleaning vinegar" that is 10% vs 5%.  Give it a good scrub with the 10%.

It will dispatch these mould spots in short order.  We wipe down the interior and water tanks every spring and fall.  Never had a problem with mould.

When I clean the deck with deck cleaner it seems to work best if you soap the deck, leave the soapy water on for 5 minutes or so before you rinse off.

If that does not work on a deck stain Collinte Fiberglas cleaner will remove just about any spot.

Good suggestion Thor — i am sure also more environmentally friendly, i will give it a try. Undiluted i imagine...

Yes use the 10% straight.  On the deck  pour a bit in a yogourt container then apply with a paint brush.   Inside we use a sponge to wipe the surfaces. Surgical gloves make it easier on your hands....

Robin, I have had the identical experience. I purchased a proxy from west marine that works wonderfully. I will have to get back to you because I am away from my boat. I’ll get back to you next week.

Tim,

I just purchased the same 30% vinegar solution from Lowes.  I plan on diluting it to 10% concentration for use in  cleaning my boat.   You should always add "Acid-to-Water" when diluting an acid. See the website below for advice on diluting acids.

FYI,

Straight 10% ??.  I just bought "Cleaning" Vinegar at our local HD, it is 30%.  Should I be afraid of that strength?
