When considering repowering a 30 Ultra with the V-Drive transmission, what advice  can  be offered on the following questions

1. The best current performing diesel engines in terms of reliability, performance, availability of service and parts?
2.  Is there any merit in rebuilding the current engine?
3. Is there a big difference in price for the engines that are suited for thr 30 Ultra?

Thanks in advance,
Ken McCormack

Normally, a boat yard will explain the ups and downs of rebuilding.  If you go the rebuild route, as a retired mechanic, I suggest a rebuilt “Long Block” from a credible engine rebuilder.  The downside of this is you will be using a lot of parts from the old engine such as manifolds, heat exchangers, alternators etc.  It should be less expensive because you keep the transmission and those items previously mentioned.  If you buy a new replacement, it will usually come with everything.  The engine I see installed a lot is a “Beta Marine” and from the boat mechanics I talk to, they like them.

Good morning

For what it is worth, I re powered my 1981 30 Classic with a Beta 30. My boat has a sail drive so the engine was built to accept the new Sea Prop 60 sail drive that I purchased with the engine. The original engine was a Volvo MD11C with a 110S sail drive. It was raw (sea) water cooled and the boat lives in salt water. The engine rusted out from the inside. The sail drive was fine and has since been relocated to Canada for further use. The Beta is fresh water cooled and with proper care should out live me. The Beta is designed so that the impeller and belt are very accessible. There is also a built in hand pump to drain the engine oil - right on the forward part of the engine!

Among the reasons for choosing a Beta was that they designed the 'feet' or engine mounts so that the Beta would fit onto the existing engine bed. The only modification I had to make to the bed was drilling and tapping one hole for one of the bolts for the mounts. Other engine manufacturers that I investigated did not offer that option. Replacing or modifying the engine bed would have added a significant expense to an already expensive project.

Beta has a positive reputation and the customer service was excellent. While I have only put 10 hours on the engine in since installing it, it has met or exceeded all expectations. I would recommend you include Beta in your consideration.

Hi Ken -

I have NO expertise in this area (I own an N22 with an outboard) but if I was going to re-power a large, comfy Nonsuch .....  I swear I'd go electric. Without a doubt.. You should email 2 members of the INA who have done just that and LOVE what they've done: They are Nonsuch vets, experienced sailors and are strong advocates of this concept and would be very helpful.

Captain Mike who sails an N30U 'Bianka"  (Micheal Girado)    mgi...@verizon.net

Jorgen Moller who sails an N26 "Pondus"     jmo...@ant.ca

These 2 fellas know it ALL when it comes to this. I would go electric in a heartbeat.

Good luck.

Before I decided to repower with Electric Propulsion I was leaning toward a Beta. I especially liked‎ how much easier maintenance would be considering where it's components like the raw water pump were located.
