Can someone give some advise on replacing or rebuilding a johnson water pump 10-24318-01. The Univeral M35 OEM 302259.

The pump is obsolete.

My pump is dripping water and I want to repair.

Thanks

It is a relatively simple repair to replace the two seals in the pump, assuming the shaft and key are in good shape. I took mine to a local pump repair shop as the seals have to be pressed in place. The most difficult job was the removal and re-installation of the pump itself. Good time to replace the impeller as well. Good luck.

I would argue that if someone doesn't have the skills to replace the seals, they may not understand what a worn shaft or bushing looks like.  My suggestion is to find the part number for the rebuild kit, Google it for the best price and then bring the kit to your favorite mechanic or boat yard for the rebuilding.  I've never spent more then a half hour rebuilding these types of pumps.  However, that does not include the cleaning, sanding or repainting of the unit which anyone can do.  Also, do yourself a favor and invest in a Speed Seal© while you're at it.

Thanks for the advise.

Still trying to find a full kit. Depco pump has everything but the shaft $330. I figure the shaft will need to be replaced. Note on my Universal M35 access to the pump is very good and not an issue.

Hi

There are other pumps that will fit the M35.  My 30U came with a new Sherwood pump, replaced by the P.O.  After 1-1/2 season it started to leak.  I found the mechanical seal leaking and the sealed bearings somewhat frozen.  My friend has an M35 in his 1995 Catalina with an Oberdorfer pump, N202M-16.

The Oberdorfer has a carbon sleeve bearing that sees and deals with sea water.  I bought an Oberdorfer pump, and rebuilt the Sherwood to use as a spare.  I plan to install it this spring.

Thanks Rich

Great Lead

Made some google searches on the Oberdorfer N202M-16 . The cost is approx $203 which is less than a rebuild kit for my Johnson ($330 less the shaft).

I found a report in the jib sheet news letter on the Catalina 36 Association site that demonstrates the minor DIY process to fit the Oberdorfer on
the M35A and M35B. I won't publish the report here since it is property from the Catalina Site. Should anyone want it I can email to them.

Apparently the water flow is less with the Oberdofer, but Catalina 36 owners are not seeing any change in their operating temps.

My boat partner and I replaced the Sherwood on the NS30U we share with an Oberdofer, generally following guidance on the Catalina 36 owners site. So far, no leaks, no change in operating temperature. Expect next impeller change to be accompanied by more polite and civilized remarks.
