For what it's worth, several years ago I installed a Warchmate stand alone AIS.
Later when I looked for an updated model called  “ vision” that had a color screen I found that Garmin bought them out.
Since they have disappeared from the market I suspect it was a “catch and Kill”operation.

I bought a Vesper AIS Watchmate unit over ten years ago. It's just the screen module the Transponder is from a different company. It has worked well though if it dies it looks like I might have to get a complete new system if they are no longer in business.

Garmin did indeed buy Vesper, but it doesn't seem to have been entirely a catch and kill operation.  Vesper's most recent products, the Cortex line of AIS, is on the Garmin website:

They're just called Cortex, no mention of Vesper, but it's the same Vesper Cortex system that I've been lusting after for several years (but not buying because, well, daddy needs a new sail first).
