Toe Rail: wood replaced with aluminum

Hi all, our N30C (hull 40) had teak toe rails. They were mounted by wood screws on top of the thru-bolts for the deck to hull connection. They were high maintenance and more importantly, they leaked. Mike Quill had/has(?) a stock of aluminum rails. I bought some and installed them with 5200 and thru bolts. Kind of a massive job, but in the end…maintenance free and DRY.

For years I’ve felt the Atlantic between my Nonsuch and most of the INA fleet — most members are in North America, and my boat lives in Europe. Still, the Nonsuch spirit is strong online, and it struck me that there’s a fun, tangible way to make that distance smaller:
sharing 3D-printable Nonsuch designs.

On our new to us 30Ultra, it is very difficult to shift. I suspect I need to replace the shift cable, but I thought I would check with this group before embarking on that to see what more experienced owners recommend.

Mainsheet Purchase Survey

bobgehrman

The standard rigging for the main sheet is a 2:1 purchase with a block on the wishbone. This results in a LOT of line. I’m curious how many have eliminated the block on the wishbone and go straight to the winch instead, to make a 1:1 purchase. Results in about half the amount of line, obviously.

Greetings!

We’re planning to attend the 2026 Rendezvous aboard Loon. Who has recommendations for where we can stay? We prefer a mooring to a slip. Are there anchorages nearby?

Also, I’m happy to sail from Noank to Greenport with another boat/boats since Nonsuch sailing is still new to me/us.

Thank you!

In the course of processing the INA membership survey, I ran across a comment from one of the respondants that read as follows:

I have a mast for a 36 sans sail track with small cracks at the halyard exit approximately 6 ft above deck tha could be sleeved by someone. There are no more currently available from original supplier. I would hate to scrap it, would be available for very reasonable price here in Ct.

It’d be a shame to lose such a big item that could be of use to someone.

I’d like to ask whoever said that to please post this information on the INA website’s MARKETPLACE under ITEMS FOR SALE. To do so, you can go to International Nonsuch Association - Items for Sale and click on the button that says, “Create topic”.

Because we ran the surveys anonymously, I’ve got no way to reach the person directly.

Thanks,

– Bob

Good afternoon Nonsuchers,

We want to refinish/varnish our dorade boxes and change the cowl scoops. How is the plexiglass attached to the top of the dorade box? I see there are screws, but it also seems to be attached with adhesive (please NOT 52,000,000!)?

And what are suggested replacements for the cowl scoops? We like the chrome ones($$$!).

If anyone who has done this job has suggestions/

First timer

David
Carol Ann - Colington Harbour, NC - #51

David

Good afternoon-

I’m hoping to get out on Carol Ann next week over the Thanksgiving Holiday. This will be my first solo cruise. WooHoo!

Question- Do I untie the sail sac before leaving the dock? Will the sail stay secured, in the sac? My sailing plan is to head out in a safe harbour, MAYBE venture out into the Sound, a much MUCH larger body of water in OBX, NC.

Current plan is NOT to raise the sail, but simply get a feel for the boat and certain operational procedures.

I’ll be solo sailing and just want to be as safe as possible, and NOT have to leave the cockpit, if at all possible.

Any advice for first sail?! I knwo how to sail, just don’t know a thing about a Nonsuch. I went out on the seatrial, but that was in March and there were 6 of us. Way too much going on to get any real instruction. Boat operated flawlessly, that’s why I bought it!

So- now it’s my turn to operate a flawless boat! Gulp! Just trying NOT to look like a total fool!

Any helpful hints would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks,

The "Hub" - Using Discourse on Cell Phones and Tablets (rewrite)

jonlewit
Jon Lewit - N26C #115 - Inua - Kingston, NY

jonlewit

topic image

The Discourse web site adapts to the size of the screen on the device that you’re using. As you move from desktop to tablet to phone, things move around and shrink to fit the real estate.

The Discourse app, called the Discourse Hub, is basically a one click way to our website, squished down and arranged so that it fits on a cell phone. It is a very quick and simple way to check the site, see new postings, and reply if you want. The Discourse Hub is available for free from Google Play and the Apple store. It runs on cell phones and tablets. [It got a low rating because it is little more than a quick way to the web site - no big new bells and whistles].

=====

Our site is nonsuch.discourse.group (the same as our website address). The first time in, you need to supply the site name. You will also need to login with your username and password.

=====

On a tablet, the screen layout will be different depending on how you orient the device. When you go to the webs site - or click on the Discourse Hub icon - if you’re holding the tablet horizontally, you get the regular web page:

Holding it vertically, things need to be rearranged a bit more:

The left side column is now accessible by clicking on the “hamburger” button in the top left, the blue “Create Topic” button is now on the left, etc. Not too different yet …

=====

Click on the Discourse icon on your phone and you get:

It opens the main page in a squished format. The hamburger button is now in the top right. Also in the upper right, I see that I have a personal message (the envelope). The Create Topic button (the pencil) is now a blue button on the upper right. In the middle, I see that there have been some postings since my last visit to our forum.

This functions just like the web site since it is actually just a smaller version of that. When I click on the first topic (it has had 9 replies), it opens the first post in that topic that I have not yet seen:

The top left has a person’s photo (or their first initial if they have not added a photo to their profile). The bottom right shows the reply button. That opens a typical email-like reply window:

NS233_Bob_Neches

I’m starting this off to avoid hijacking another thread on advice to a new Nonsucher that started raising a bunch of points relevant to single handing.

I hope people will use this to talk about a range of issues, e.g.:

  • PFDs and handling overboard situations
  • Avoiding and handling injuries
  • Signalling and communications with others
  • Staying on board
  • Making it easier to control and operate the boat

Let me start with PFDs, reacting to an “inflatable PFD, pro or con” set of comments in that other thread.

Although I agree with the folks who’ve said that inflatable PFDs keep you from swimming, I disagree with blanket advice on what type of PFD to use.

I feel there’s some questions each singlehander should ask about themselves, their sailing grounds, and their boat before choosing one life vest over another.

Where do you think you’re going to swim to, and how good a swimmer are you? What’s the water like where you sail? And, if you’re gonna try to get back to your boat, how’re you gonna get back in?

With my swimming skills, if I was in Florida warm water, my chances of swimming to shallows I could stand up in are decent. If I my boat had a swim step or was rigged so I could pull down the swim ladder while in the water, and if it stayed nearby, I might be able to get back in. A vest PFD that maximizes my mobility makes sense.

Where I actually sail, in the situations where I’m most likely to go overboard, I’m at least a mile offshore in deep, cold water. I probably have 5-10 minutes before hypothermia sets in and I wouldn’t be able do much of anything for myself, either swimming or getting back in the boat. It’s a survival situation and I want a PFD with maximum flotation while I focus on preserving heat and hoping for rescue. I’ll take my inflatable PFD promising 37.5 lbs. of flotation over a vest with 15 lbs.

In point of fact, if I go overboard under my conditions while singlehanding, I’d regard my chances of surviving as under 50% at best. So, while I wear an inflatable PFD, I need to focus on staying in the boat. That’s a topic for other posts on this thread, but I’ll stop here for now.

Stainless Mast Straps

Rob
Soave - N33 #009 - Westport, CT

Rob

Inspection showed early signs of corrosion under the stainless straps used to secure the aluminum mast track. I suspected that the isolation layer between the mast and stainless strap may have failed, but the only way to know for sure is to cut the strap, inspect , and replace it.

I began the process yesterday, and had two surprises. First a good one… mast under the strap looked good. Second, not so good. I had thought it would be simple to slide the strap out from behind Soave’s Tides sail track. It seems to be fastened such that I may need to remove the tides track.

Before I move forward with unnecessary effort, does anyone know the proper disassembly procedure for the stainless straps ? Should they slide out from behind the Tides Sail Track or do I have to remove the track to remove the old strap ?

For some added visual perspective, ( HERE ) is a link to the Google Album I’m using to document this project.

Thanks,
Rob…

Do I need both sets of reefing lines as a day sailor

Dickbart
Richard

Dickbart

I’m a Nonsuch 22 newbie but an experienced “old” sailor. These days I am content to day sail with some short over nights. The lines leading back to the cockpit can be daunting. On my former Cape Dory 25D I had slab reefing with 2 reef positions and only two control lines, each at the mast, one on each side. You only needed to handle the lines if you were reefing.

On the Nonsuch there are two reef positions but two lines for each reef. And the reef lines must be handled at the beginning and end of every trip to raise and lower the sail.

My last years with my Cape Dory as my sailing horizons shortened, I stopped rigging the 2nd reef. I still carried it on board just in case but I never needed it.

My question - is there any good reason why I can’t do the same with my Nonsuch and just not rig the two lines for the deeper reef? Like with my sloop rig, I would still carry the lines on board in the unlikely event I would need them.

This is my first post on the Discourse Hub App. Thank you Jon for your help!

Removing the rudder post grease cup cover

Christian_Pastore
Magic Time, NS22 electric, Fishing Bay Yacht Club, Deltaville, VA

Christian_Pastore

Greetings all.

Does anyone know how to remove the cover from the rudder post grease cup? I have a 22 but a review of the manuals on the INA website suggests that all the Nonsuches have the same greasecap. I assume that it is either threaded or just a pressure fit but I cannot tell from looking at it. Before I start cranking with pliers I thought I should ask.

Thanks in advance.

Solar panels?

NS30Loon
Richard

NS30Loon

Good morning, who has added solar panels to their Nonsuch? We are on a mooring so this is an upgrade we are considering. For those who have installed solar panels, what kind have you added, and where dif you mount them? Since the wishbone extends over the bimini, it presents a hazard to mounting solar panels there (especially hard panels). We can get an 86” x 26” 200W soft panel that could be mounted on the dodger (BougeRV). Has anyone gone this route? Finally, if you have embarked on this project, some pictures and details would be welcome. Thank you for the consideration.

Insurance claim

Mike
Mike Jennings.

Mike

A couple of week ago Chancy was resting peacefully at the dock when a power boat ran into her bending the pushpit and damaging the deck at 3 stanchion bases.

There was a witness and the owner of the boat came forward.

I am now getting an education about insurance.

I reported the incident to my insurance co. and thought that would take care of the problem.

Maybe not. I just got a call from my adjuster to say that my insurance is based on the assessed value and the boat is 40odd years old. That I have to organise the repairs, pay for them and see what I get (my interpretation of the conversation). I will not have to pay the deductible.

I should have at least had insurance on an agreed value. The premium is based on a value of $45,000 but that is just used to determine the amount of the premium.

Incidentally I was at a presentation on rigging last week and talked to the presenter about the mast. It would be interesting to hear about owners insurance claims for damaged masts as well as claimed like mine.

The adjuster has a 70 year old wooden boat.

Ever have a stainless steel shackle explode?

I was out sailing on a beautiful day in Baltimore when all of a sudden, the clew on sail starts flopping in the wind. I thought perhaps that my dyneema lashing had come off the cleat, but in fact it was that the stainless steel shackle that connects the end of the boom to the clew that blew up!

When I bought Nonsuch it had a number of dings on the bow from anchor hits. No big surprise with a) a very vertical stem and b) boats that anchor often. I filled the blemishes and had a stainless protector made. It is 1/4” 316 stainless. It certainly could have been 3/16” or even 1/8”. I made a template from Bristol board and took it to a metal shop that advertised ‘no job too small’ We have anchored many times and no further damage. Since it is off-season for many boats - thought it would be a good time to post this.

Engine Removal N30U

My engine over heats and I would like to remove it and have professionals with all the equipment go over it. I would rather rebuild than replace if it is financially reasonable.

She overheats and runs at about 200+. After a while the engine seems to tighten up, she will no longer idle at 1,000. If attempted she will stall. A restart is difficult, she seems difficult to turn over. I don’t need a lecture about damage that can be done running hot.

I have done the following:

This is a topic where the admins will post some little things about our site that may be of help. Everyone is welcome to post a reply covering something about navigating Discourse. Any discussion about a particular subtopic will be consolidated into a more complete reference.

To kick this off -

If you squeeze all of the stuff that you used to have on your signature line into the Name field (in your Preferences / Profile entry):

then it will appear on top of every one of your postings:

(even if you don’t do this, your Nonsuch model, location, etc. is available on your “card” which people can see by clicking gon your profile picture, but this is quicker)

ZF/Hurth transmission cooler

Breezin
Don - '87 NS30U #369 Vancouver BC

topic image

Hello,
My boat has a ZF/Hurth v-drive transmission with a transmission cooler attached. During recent checking of the transmission fluid level, I discovered what I believed to be water inside the transmission. Today with some help, we removed the cooler discovered a hole in it, and corresponding soft spot in the transmission casing adjacent to the hole in the cooler. This is how the water was getting into the transmission. I believe the hole was caused by electrolysis between the cooler and the transmission case.

So, I am wondering how many other Nonsuch’s with the ZF/Hurth v-drive have a transmission cooler installed?

And for those that do, have you experienced a similar problem?

Thanks,
Don

Hatch board replacement source?

Good mooring!

Like what I must assume are many others, I have some tired, old, hatch boards aboard Loon. A local glass shop can fabricate new boards from plexiglass. However, the Admiral prefers the look of wood. Does anybody know of a fabricator who will make replacement boards for us? I envision shipping the current boards and having them used as templates for replacements. Thank you for the consideration.

I am considering installing A/C in my 1986 Nonesuch 30 Ultra. Can anyone share examples? Did you add another 30amp plug? Did you use a d/c type HVAC unit? Is 5000btu about right for Chesapeake, NY Long Island, Canadian summer or Bahamas winters? Where did you locate it on the boat? did you put in ductwork or just have it blast out in one location?

Pictures are gratefully appreciated too.

To all Nonsuchers,

This email is to inform you that I will be taking orders for swim platforms and ladder extensions from October through December. Bulk orders for these items are done once per year.
This is my final reminder for 2025 orders.

For many years I’ve coordinated the bulk ordering through Stainless Outfitters.
To date there have been 103+ swim platforms and 74+ ladder extensions made for the 26’s, 30’s, 33’s and 36’s shipped to locations in Canada and the US.
Stainless Outfitters can also provide a swim platform for the inboard version of the 22’s.

See sample pictures below of the swim platform and ladder extension.

The following represents the current bulk pricing.
Please note that it is expressed in US dollars and is exclusive of taxes and shipping.
An upgrade made to this and future orders is that 316 stainless tubing is to be used.

  • Platform with 3/4" Starboard polymer (off white) decking,
telescoping 4 step ladder (mounted under platform) and
    mid transom step/grab bar…$2280.

  • Replacement stern rail gate w/pelican hook, PVC coated
    wire and shackles …$180.

  • Ladder extensions only …$ 180.

I will be taking orders until December 31st of this year.
For those of you who have already contacted me, no need to do so again.
A subsequent email will follow to gather your specific details.

In the meantime if you have any questions at all please feel free to
email me at ron.sc...@gmail.com
