I have stored mine on board in sail bag for 20 plus years without incident. My boats have been covered with canvas too. I have never had mice on board - knock on wood!

I keep mine in my walk in basement and place Bounce drier sheet around it to repel mice. Leaving the sail on for the winter is a non starter for me and most sailers.
