Steps to replace oil seal on Hurth V-drive transmission

The Hurth V-drive on our 1988 30U developed a leak at the rear seal.

I'd appreciate any advice on the repair to share with the local
mechanic.

Specifically, does the engine have to be lifted off the forward
mounts, or can the
transmission be removed without affecting the mounts?

I'm assuming you are talking about the seal where the "V" drive exits the transmission.  There was some discussion on this subject within the last year or so.  It may have involved cutting something just forward of the trans to facilitate removal after if was broken free of the engine.  I strongly suggest that you immediately start soaking the nuts/and or bolts that have to be removed.

Here is the link to my blog post about removing my Westerbeke diesel engine from my Nonsuch:
It shows how I removed the transmission. It's possible the seal is behind the clutch plate? shown in some of the photos.  But, I am not sure as I was only interested in getting the engine of the boat and never had to remove the plate.
